Topic Dog Boards / Health / Savlon???
- By John [gb] Date 05.09.04 16:06 UTC
I was talking to someone today and the topic of antiseptics came up. She said that Savlon should never be used on dogs! Has anyone heard this or have any info on it? I've never used the cream on dogs but only because It has never happened. I have used Savlon Wound Wash though, on a barbed wire cut on Anna's head last week which has healed up nicely.

Best wishes, John

That's odd, John, because one of the vets at our practice said that Savlon was the best one to use on dogs because it was least likely to cause reactions! I must admit I've ignored that advice and continued to use TCP because Savlon brings me out in a rash ... :o

I quite often use savlon spray, I keep it in the emergency kit, and my Vet knows I do, I never like the creams though as they tend to create a barrier that can keep things in ;-)

I use calendula and hypericum cream myself because I feel it is more effective and soothing; I certainly stay away from TCP et al as although it may kill off germs it also kills of tissue............ and stings!

One of my bitches has had a urine infection and I use  very dilute Savlon every day on her with no problems, I also use four capfuls in a bucket of water to swill down the patio used by 8 dogs and have found it excellent in preventing smells.
