Topic Dog Boards / Health / Moose is not well :(
- By LJS Date 29.08.04 06:46 UTC
I think we are going to have to take her to see the vet as she has developed a nasty cough and has been sick three times so far this morning. She is not a happy puppy :(

What really worries me that if it is KC then I am really concerned for Min as Moose is young and fit so will be able to get over this. If Min caught it then I am not sure if she would be able to fight it off being so old, she is 14 in a couple of weeks.

A question I have is that do most insurers pay for out of hours charges for vets ? It is not an issue as would pay it anyway but just curious.

Hope they are both ok Lucy, can you keep them seperate in case any infection has not already been passed on?  As for the insurance I would guess that if your Vet considers it a real emergency he will sign the forms and the Insurance companies seem to go by that.
Good luck, let us know how you get on......

We can't really seperate them as Min needs access to the outside at all times thro the dog flap because of her colitis and Moose keeps going out to be sick. If it is KC then it is so infectious then I think she will have already passed it on. Both Min and MB are showing no signs of it at all.

I am going to ring the vets soon just to see what say.

When my lot got KC I was really worried about my old dog who had a heart complaint.  As it was he and the next oldest were the only two who didnt pick up the KC, probably because they had had so long to pick up the natural immunity against it.  I do hope your old dog doesn't catch it.

I don't see why the insurers shouldn't pay the out of hours charge as long as the reason for going out of hours was reasonable.

Min had a dose a while back and was very poorly then. It is a worry but will keep a very good eye on them.

I have phoned the vet and they have said to take Moose if she seems to be lethargic. She has just had some Benelyn and yoghurt and has taken herself off to bed for a snooze.

They have said that they would charge us £60 for the callout but all else would be covered by the insurance.

With a bit of luck she will already have met or had this virus and will have a certain amount of immunity. But if she does develop it the vet may well give a course of AB's to make sure she will not develop and secondary problems.

Hope Moose feels better soon.
The insurance will pay out (ours did anyway) because the vet feels that treatment is necessary out of hours.

My young male caught kc, at the time my pups were not quite 4wks old & their mum & himself were the only ones who had never had kc before. I immediatly upped their vitC & echinacea levels daily & started giving them h/pathic medication. Fortunatley it never spread to the pups or their dam & the only other one of my dogs to go down with it was Rex, my rescue gsd & he only had it very mildly. Very worrying I know, but you could start giving them immune boosters to try & ward it off or at least minimise it`s effects.

I have always sworn by benlyn and honey its worked for us for our dogs for many years

MB has now got it but so far Min seems to be OK. The two youngsers are feeling very sorry for themselves but I am sure some Nature diet and gravy for their dinner will probably make them perk up ! :)
