Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Anal Furunclosis in GSD's

Has anyone had any experience of the above disease.  It is meant to be quite common in German Shepherds and german shepherd crosses.  My beautiful german shepherd dog had to be put to sleep nearly 7 weeks ago because he had this disease.  He only had the disease a few months and the only symptom was that he was washing his bottom more than usual.  We just thought it was anal gland trouble but when we took him to the vets he was diagnosed with this horrible disease.  I didn't know that it was a life threatening condition and had never heard of it before.  He was put on high dose steroids and antibiotics but nothing really worked and at the end he couldn't go to the toilet at all so we had no choice but to have him put to sleep.  I loved that dog so much, he was my best friend and I still cry most nights for him.  He was not even 6 years old when he died.  It would have been his 6th birthday last Sunday.  I just can't understand why it killed him so quickly when some dogs can apparently live for years with it.

I'm so very sorry to hear  about your beautiful GSD.
I don't have any experience of this disease so can't really comment, but i just wanted to send my condolences.

Im so very very sorry. Anal Furunculosis (Chronic pustular Infection) is a terrible illness as i have known people in the leonberger world lose their dogs to this.
I lost the love of my life last year to cancer he was just 6years old i thought i would never get over it. Dudley was my world he died in my arms at the vets, he cried as much as i did he knew we were to part. Time is a great healer. I still find it hard to talk about him..... Take care.
