My friends 12 yr old bitch got out about three weeks ago and she thinks she may be expecting, she rang her vet and he say's he can't do anything untill next Friday when he should be able to tell for sure. Is this going to be to late and should she go to another vet. She is worried sick, and yet feel's that this vet know's his stuff and her lady. Advice please. Viv

If the bitch is 4 weeks gone I think the only answer will be for the bitch to be spayed. If you go to the vet within about 3 days they can give an injection.

There is an injection thay bitched can have upto day 45. Isnt a 12 year old dog too old to be spayed? Would the injection be a better bet. Your vet will know what should be best - he recomended a spay for my 4 year old bitch.

Just been on the phone to her and the vet suggested being spayed, she is really worried about the anersetic, he hasn.t mentioned the injection is it a common practise do you know? Viv

The injection isn't 100% foolproof. Anaesthetics are much safer these days than they used to be, so personally I would opt for the spay.

It's probably safer for a 12-year old bitch to be spayed than to give birth to a litter, especially where the sire (and the breed/size of him) are unknown.

I agree with the fact that it is safer to spay than give birth. My vet gave the impression that the up to 45 day injections were alot stronger than the 3 & 5 day injections. Did he not mention these? Thay are about as expensive as a spay though.

A friend of mine is going through the same thing with her 11 month Jack russel pup.
I phoned my vet for her to get a second opinion, i was told that the injection can only be given up to day 5 and that it causes some really severe reactions. She said that it can bring on all sorts of cancers ect. They said that i spay would be the best option and they can spay upto 50days.

It was after the injection that mt Mams CKCS was diagnosed with liver cancer.
She had the injection at 4 years old and died of the cancer at 7 yrs old.

She wasn't expecting after all that panic, and is being spayed tomorrow. My friend send's her thank's.
