my german shepherd bitch is one and a half now and has been vet checked every 3 months of her life so she is upto date withh all vaccienies and worming and the vet cant find anything wrong with her im feeding her 2 meals aday and she get pleanty of treats. however she does do alot of excercise should i cut down on the excercise? she is in season every 5 months and 2 months befor she does come in she does lose a bit of weight. my vet always says it is better to have a thin dog as a overweight one is this right? is there anything i can do to fatten her up abit.
thanks mark

Hi - your vet is right - a slim dog is much healthir than a tubby one. Do the stroke test - when you stroke your hands along her sides what do you feel? Bony ribs sticking out? Bumpy ribs beneath some covering? Or do you need to press hard to feel the ribs? If it's the second, then she's perfect.

Just like people, most dogs nowadays are too fat, and you start thinking that's normal ...

Once had a GSD bitch that was so thin I am surprised I did not get a visit from the RSPCA, she was like it all 15 years of her active life.

I knew a gsd who looked REALLY thin.  Vet said he was absolutely fine, fit and healthy.  I wouldn't worry about it.
