Topic Dog Boards / General / question re car sickness postings
- By gina [gb] Date 09.02.02 19:58 UTC
I have read the car sickness postings but still puzzled about what to do. Managed to borrow a crate for Barney today to see how he fared. Took him down petsmart to help get him used to people and other dogs in a different environment (he loved both) but on the way back he dribbled so much I couldnt believe it and then was sick and hasnt spoken to me since!! Someone mentioned Sturgeron on one of the postings but not sure what to give him. He is a 5 month old Lhasa. Could someone tell what is safe and how much to give him etc. Or is there something else you could recommend. Many thanks Gina. (Or should I ask the vet?)

HI Gina

We had one with BAD car sickness and it was trial and error with her - took us a year to find a permanent cure. You can try ginger or ginger nut cookies before the trip - that helps settle tummies. Also, lots of short trips to fun places. What really worked with ours was a BIG fluffy pillow - the vibration from the car made her sick (well - part of it was phsychological, but once we got past that she was still sick until we put the cushion in). We also taught her to throw up into a 'doggie bag' (which you can't do if he's crated) as we just figured she would be like that forever. Some people swear by Rescue Remedy (also knows as Bach's flower remedy?). I haven't tried that as I didn't have internet access to ask the questions when we were going through it.

Hope these help.

Wendy

Great thing the internet isnt it! I shall try the ginger nuts .. afraid to say he does like half a ginger nut dunked into tea ....... so I will try him with a dry one tomorrow and we will try the short trip round the block on quiet roads without the crate. He had a nice soft bed in the crate but that didnt work - in fact being a coward cos he was sick on it I threw it away. We dont want to put him into kennels cos he is so young so will be holidaying in Scotland hopefully and as I live in Surrey we shall have to try and find some sort of remedy for his car sickness or we will never get there ... poor little thing ..Many thanks Gina

Gina its just a thought but you could try bachs rescue remedy,it was originally made for trawler/fishermen in rough seas its wonderful for bonfire night (dogs/horses/humans) I'm off the manchester show now and Ill be having some too.
Give it a try.

Hi, I have heard that "sealegs" bought from the chemist are excellent, but not sure of the dosage, Irene, where are you? Make sure he hasn't had a meal for a few hours. You may be able to prevent him being sick by having him on your lap and holding his head up, though I understand you are getting him usedto his crate. Almost all puppies are car sick to begin with, just make sure you take him out every single day for a short journey, on an empty stomach, preferably so short that he doesn't have a chance to be sick. If you have children at school, the school run is a good one, and then breakfast when he gets home.

I swear by having an open window. Also, we have noticed our Banya is sick if we have a journey with lots of twists and turns (understandably) but not on relatively straight roads. So, plan the route carefully...:D

I have 2.1/2 year old westie, that was very car sick untill a few months ago, when Irene told me about "Sea Legs", I had tablets from the vet, but did not like using them as they made her dopey, last October we went on holiday, we always take the dogs, and I gave her one of the tablets from the vet, on the journey there but she was still car sick, so I bought some Sea Legs, I gave her half a tablet every morning, and she was fine in the car all day, I also gave her half a tablet for the journey home, again she was fine, so no more car sickness for us, they did not make her dopey ether.

Thank you Leigh, I just hope my post helps, The Sea Legs were the only thing that worked for Jade, I can now for the first time in 2 years look forward to going away again without the worry of car sickness.

Thanks everyone. Shall take him for short trips (he is going on one at the moment to get the Sunday papers!) and the window is open. I shall try both sealegs and bachs but am still a bit bothered about how much to give Barney. I am afraid of giving him too much. Has anyone any ideas of what is safe for a 20lb 5 month old lhasa (yes 20lb although I have been told it is puppy fat!) Many thanks Gina.

Gina, I don't know about bachs, but as for sea legs, a Lhasa at 20lb, should be similar to westie size, I was told to give a whole sea leg to my westie, but found half a tablet did the job brilliantly.

I'm glad that you found something that worked for your dog Kat :-) I think half the battle is knowing where to start looking for a possible 'cure'.

Let us know how you get on Gina.
