I have a Minature Schnauzer bitch 20months old who is in the process of having a phantom pregnancy.  This is my first dog and I would like advice on what is the best way to treat her... She thinks one of her toys is her pup and howls and whimpers if she is not with it.  Were not sure whether to leave it with her or take it off her, we have had mixed advice.  She goes to work with my husband and has alot of attention but howls and whimpers if he leaves the room.  I would be grateful if you could offer me some advice.  Many thanks.  Maria B.

Hi Maria,
Your poor girl - they can have a roughtime with phantoms. The best thing to do is take her toy away completely, cut down her food slightly and up her exercise. Try not to be sympathetic, but rather be the 'games-mistress, Jolly-hockey-sticks' type and keep her busy. Don't give her time to brood.

Raspberry leaf tablets, if given early, can often help minimise the symptoms, and won't do any harm.

Good luck!
