Hi, i'm looking for a gold cocker spaniel puppy, I've done a lot of research on the breed,
not only are they absolutely gorgeous looking but they have a great temperament aswell. Only question is, do i get a bitch or a dog? Some people have said a bitch is better as a first dog, as they are easier to handle, what do you guys think?
thanks for your help.

The main thing is that you get your dog from a reputable breeder because they don't all have great temperaments. I think male vs. female depends on the breed. It was advised to me when getting my fist Doberman to get a female. Of course, I got a male. And it's worked out just fine. He's a big, in your face love bug. There were some differences talked about between the sexes as far as stubborness, pushiness, rate of maturing, plusses and minusses of both. Some said the females were affectionate, but on their terms, sometimes moody, just like people.....where the males were more steady, the same.... and good 'ole boy slobs, always right there. (I'm finding that true)There were higher rates of cardio in males and cancer in females. So take your pick. That was with Dobes.
But I don't know about the differences in Cockers. Can you talk to some breeders and show people more familiar with the breed? It may be that there are some similarities with Cockers too, as was mentioned. I've had various breeds of dogs, both males and females and I've loved them all and have not noticed anything hugely different about them. Good luck.
