Topic Dog Boards / General / Bitches First Season - Help !!!!!
- By jane [gb] Date 15.08.04 06:22 UTC
My little bitch is having her first season - and not having had a bitch before - it is my first as well lol - so could do with some advice please.

I have 2 castrated males, 4 and 2, plus 2 other bitches, a neutered one of 4 and a pup of 5 months.

Since Ella started her season the whole house has gone mad - some dog is weeing all over the place, some dog is weeing on Ella!! Some dog is pooing indoors. The 2 castrated boys are trying their hardest to get their end away. Ella has a mad look in her eye that says 'please' ...... And the boys have even started trying to hump the 5 month old bitch puppy.

Could someone please help me try and make sense of all this ? Sorry to post in general but i didnt know if it was a health, behaviour or breeding problem lol lol

A bitch being in season usually excites the others.  In my house they all end up playing trains/circus elephants.  The worst time was when I had three bitches in season at once and they were all wearing stupid expressions and squeaking and rousting about all the time.  Used to have to yell at them to pack it in and settle.  I only have bitches so no actual mating could occcur, but they sre gave a good impression of the dead :D

As for the peeing I suspect it is one or both of the boys marking her as theirs.  Just because they are castrated does not mean they will loose interest in sex altogether , it just usally makes them lessinterested, but a bitch in full seqason is enough provocation to ignite old memories/instinct.  I suspect she is at the height of her season and things will gradually calm down again, especialy once she becomes a little more assertive that she would like the attentions to stop.

Yourt best bet is to give the others a chance to chill out by removing her to another rom for a bit when t all gets too much for you, and to avoid any spats due to the heightened excitement.

Your bitch may also be having accidents, as like in pregnancy the normal urine storage patterns seem to be upset and they find they can't hold on as they normally can, added to which in this warm weather she will be drinking more so needs to pee more often, and of course there may be some marking/advertising going on.

As you have found out neutered does not = disinterested, well not in most cases. The 2 castrated dogs will be interested and so may be the spayed bitch, it may well be one of the bitches who is marking, either the in season bitch or the spayed one. Bitches in season will mark and also sometimes loose some of the control they had over their elimination so it could just be an accident. Would think things will return to normal when she has finished but I would just keep an eye open for any bitch on bitch aggression and jump on it immediately.

Think you must have posted Brainless whilst I was composing my reply, would assure the poster that I had not read your reply and was not just repeating more or less what you said, just speaking from experience ;)
