I have a new problem now that my baby has become a toddler! Whenever I have I floor play with him, our 3 year old dog always has to become  involved. This is not a good idea as playing with a dog can sometimes get out of hand! I've tried to distract the dog with food or put him in another room but as he's a playful-one of the family dog it doesn't seem fair. I can overcome this problem but as time goes by & my toddler becomes more adventuresome it is becoming increasingly difficult! Has anyone got the same problem I would like to hear from you!

I had 2 differing problems with 2 different bitches. The first one allowed my daughter to learn how to walk using her as a climbing frame (wish I'd taken pics ;) ). The 2nd bitch hates toddlers, in fact any child under about 10 years of age. She growls at them before taking herself off to bed.

You will know your own dog best. Try not to let it become too much of a problem in the first place. If the dog is friendly towards the toddler I don't see a major problem at all. So long as you don't be too negative with it. Encourage the dog to be 'gentle' and not be too enthusiastic for a while, at least until toddler is walking. It's a good thing for children to be brought up with dogs, but both need to be taught respect for one another. :)

I would advise insistence on both being gentl with each other, but otherwise allowing the dog to be around the babe.  Of course they should be parted if either gets overwrought or when you cannot watch them.

My daughter was a toddler wehn I had my first dog a BSD and they were inseperble though she couldn't cope with kids enmasse, and was never allowed to run around with them if they were playing, had to come lie down by me.

When she died my son was a toddler, and my Elkhound pup had to be restrained from kncoking himover, so only got petted in the down position.  The Elkhounds have not been as sensitive as the BSD was and can handle kids very well, but again I would never leave them alone with a very young child for the dogs protection :D

My freinds Grandaughter learnt to walk holding onto teo of mine and laso the family Golden Retriever.

is there another person that could help with the situation?
when you play with your child, they play quiet games with the dog, or do some training but in the same room, just so the dog realises it has to be quiet and if it gets to rough then the person can remove it from the room until it calms down. hope this helps
