Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / miniature jack russell
- By Guest [gb] Date 10.08.04 07:19 UTC
Hi
Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a miniature or toy jack russell? If so, how big are they in comparisn to a normal sized one and how do their characters compare?
Also, where can I get one?
Any advice appreciated...thanks
Rachael.

No, there isn't. There is only the short-legged terrier known as the Jack Russell, which isn't KC recognised as a breed (mainly because it is so variable) or the longer-legged, KC recognised Parson Russell Terrier.

The short legged jack russell is often referred to as a Miniature because they are somewhat smaller than the long legged Parson Russell.
Even Parson breeders call them miniatures.

It is true that the GP refer to any small Fox terrier type dog as a Jack Russell and I think that it is easier to think of them as Jack Russell type, some are very small with a bowed front leg and others are far more like the Fox Terrier or the Parson Russell in type. Sure to those who use the Jack Russell there are clear differences but to people at large any of the black, brown, white terriers below about 16" is thought of as a Jack Russell although it may well be one of a number of distinct breeds.

don't usually like JRT but these are the best I've seen - lovely straight front legs and they look to have good overall consruction.

The Jack russells from Cumbria are NOT KC reg,The only Russell that is KC reg is the Parson Russell.

Jack Russells are a funny breed to be into at the moment- there is alot going on with the KC at present. In the USA they are going for a second attempt with AKC for registration & here in England i am just about to put forth the first attempt but its bloomin hard work!
The dogs you refer to in the link Velma are mine. And no they are not english KC reg yet, but i do hope to have IKC reg on them shortly.

The KC gave members of both british Jack Russell clubs the oppertunity to register as Parson Russells last year,i know that over 200 dogs were registered the majority being from one kennels bloodlines.Everyone was told that this was the only chance to do this and that they would not be registering a separate Jack Russell.

watch this space!!! you just have to go to a championship show and watch the parson russell classes, what was the kennel club think when they open the breed register and let the jacks in!!!!

Exactly Parson Lady! Watch this space indeed.
I have always been against the mix of the two breeds the KC made a big boo boo IMO.
The parson Breeders didn't want us in their breed & we certainly didn't want our dogs classed as Parsons! The 2 are different & not just in height, both types have a totally different background & they should have been classified seperately a long time ago then we wouldn't have this mess we have now.

America & England are as yet the only countries not to recognise both types. The Parson gene pool i have heard is being ruined because of the influx of the JRT they are getting variation in the litters produced from the 'newly' registered PRT's. Not sure if this is happening just what i've heard on the grapevine but i'd guess it probably will be having an effect on the overall type.
If we had enough PRT breeders & JRT breeders putting in complaints to the KC about the whole situation then maybe we'd all get what we want.
I know the kennels your talking about that registered nearly all of their dogs when the registry opened up & i can say they didn't think they had a choice.
I didn't take up the offer as i have my morals & would rather wait & wait if i have to rather than register my dog as something its not.
Maybe we should start a petition!LOL

got it in one.....why mr irving and gang couldn't do the right thing and give jack russell k.c reg but oh no....we now have two breeds in the same ring.it's no differents than putting smooth and wire fox terriers in together.
money money money....i sure that's why one jr breeder has reg'd sooo many dogs and still he has not changed his sign.  i think it's alittle too late to complain to kc...they are a law to themselves.i don't think parson breeders would use one of the 'new' parson stud dogs but only time will tell...........myself no way
just had a look at your web site and i must say you have some really nice looking jrt's but you are right .....parsons they are not .i hope that came out right... a little early 16 four leg's to sort out!!!!

LOL@ Parson Lady! Yep it came out right- they ain't Parsons.
Your very right it is like putting both the W/H Fox Terrier & Smooth Fox Terrier into the same classification as 'one breed' i am sure there would be an uproar in the FT's if the KC done that!
But i do agree the KC is a law unto themselves which is a shame really as its supposed to have 'all breeds' well being in mind, putting the 2 types together is certainly not for the best interests of either breed.

Rather reminiscent of the Belgian shepherd fiasco.  wonder how many years it will take the KC and how much damage to the breeds before the aquiese to the breeders and recognise that they are not the same.
