Topic Dog Boards / General / WHICH DDA BREED IS MOST TRUSTWORTHY??? (locked)
- By BullBoy [gb] Date 09.08.04 15:58 UTC
i know its a bit of a random question but which of the four breeds is seen as possibly the best of a bad bunch, im aware that no breed is born aggressive, its the way there brought up before anyone pounces on me.

I have heard that under good circumstances the pit bull terrier can be the most wonderful of pets and so can dogo argentino, but in your opinion which is the best.

Not so much 'random', more 'predictable'
- By BullBoy [gb] Date 09.08.04 16:23 UTC
Whats that suppost to mean????????????????????????
- By Stacey [gb] Date 09.08.04 16:29 UTC
"im aware that no breed is born aggressive, its the way there brought up"

I don't agree.  A breed or some population of a breed can be selectively bred to be aggressive.  Such is the case with the pit bull, which in the hands of some people who selectively breed these dogs for pit fighting only breed aggressive to aggressive.  The way they are brought up cannot fundamentally change that aggression and these dogs will always be a potential danger.  To believe otherwise is naive, I'm afraid.

That's not to say that ever pit bull is aggressive.  Responsible breeders - which excludes anyone involved in dog fighting -- breed for sound, stable, confident temperament and would exclude any dog that shows aggressive out of their breeding program.

So it's not the breed -- it's the breeders that are the problem.

no idea, never met any of those on the DDA list as of course they are banned here in the UK.  With the hundreds of dog breeds available that are not on the DDA list I cannot see any reason to find out either.

Several years ago when I knew someone who bought a house on a new build development, one of the builders had a lovely dog who used to play happily with my children.  His only "fault" was chewing through broom handles in one bite!  He was very gentle with the children and I never for a moment had anything to be concerned about; they would throw things for him, play "tug of war" all day and feed him digestive biscuits.  His owner was responsible and cared for his dog.  The dog was a pit bull.

In the States Pit bulls seem to be more accepted as pets, not sure about the ins and outs of it I am afraid. But it's not unusual for a US owner to introduce themselves on a forum and say "....and i own a pit bull called Sally" or similar.

stacey you can not be more wrong about pitbull dogfighting breeders.they didnt breed agressive to agressive to get agressive pitbuls.
they bred game dogs to game dogs which is totally different.this also doesnt mean that the dog is dog agressive also bas not all game dogs were.and i will not get into the subject.
most people into that terrible sport actually made it a thing to put to sleep any pitbull that was human aggressive(it would have been unable for a human to handle the dog during a fight)and it was also against the dog standard to show any aggression to humans-it was considered against true form.
nowadays its seems to be the american staff(which is considered a totally seperate breed from the pitbul but had the same ancestory)which is more aggressive to humans as they are not testing temperaments but only for show winning looks.
a true pitbull would lick you to death even a burglar in the house.it may be aggressive to other dogs but even then a responsible owner wouldnt be letting his/her dog off the lead in a public place.
however i would agree certain dogs are very aggressive but in terms of overly protective.like the fila and tosa and bully kutta(which seem aggressive to even their handlers)
- By russett1 [gb] Date 09.08.04 18:09 UTC
was going to post in support of pitbulls but pyndath has pretty much said everything that needs to be said.

pitbulls were never bred to be aggressive towards humans, there has been a recent trend in america to try and breed pitbulls which have a softer temperament towards other dogs too.

of course there will always be elements of the population who breed for aggressive tendencies and encourage these in their dogs with games to enhance the dogs biting/agression etc , but IMO it is the people who are at fault not the dog or the breed.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 09.08.04 18:54 UTC
What on earth is the point of this discussion, most of us have never met the breeds on the list so why on earth are we talking about it.
- By wheaten_mad [gb] Date 09.08.04 18:59 UTC

I ahree Jackie. To pass comment on a question like this you need to have met a selection of all the breeds and have spent enough time with them to understand the way they react in all circumstances.Hence IMO this question cannot be answered by anyone in this coiuntry since although some people may have had experiences of Pitbulls the other breeds have never had any great numbers in this country.

In other words perhaps the original poster will let us know just why this question has been asked, it is hard to believe that they thought the question could lead to anything constructive but perhaps they hoped for trouble.

Surprised this post has not been deleted to be honest.  PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By BullBoy [gb] Date 09.08.04 19:38 UTC
WHY ARE SOME OF YOU SO AGGRESSIVE and yes i know im shouting. i merely put this post up from the perspective of what you have read about the dogs. I wanted to gage some opinions from people as to what they thought of the breed from what they have read, DER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 09.08.04 19:43 UTC
As we have said Bull Boy how the H*ll would we know, it only needs a little thought to realise that we could not possibly know any of the breed well, never mind all 4, what do you think we are a collective group of illegal dog owners? How can you form an opinion from reading even supposing we were interested enough to search out such material.
- By pyndath [gb] Date 10.08.04 09:10 UTC
you just hve to tell bullboy your opinion.makes me angry that a person cant ask a simple question which some people may not like.YOU DONT HAVE TO ANSWER NO 1 IS FORCING YOU TO!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 09.08.04 19:43 UTC
But reading is no good - you need personal experience to have a valid point of view, not just churning out someone else's opinion! And as all the breeds are illegal in this country, and we are all law-abiding citizens (aren't we?) we won't know.
- By russett1 [gb] Date 09.08.04 20:04 UTC
bullboy, I can only comment from experience on the pitbull as we owned one prior to the DDA and they are the best dog you could ever own, as for the other breeds I couldnt say but I dont think that you asking the question was a bad thing, you just came to the wrong place to ask it, some people on here arent very tolerant, and dont like to discuss subjects which are controversial.  :-)
- By Jeff (Moderator) Date 09.08.04 20:50 UTC
Over the years I have been lucky enough to travel around and I have also been lucky enough to meet specimens of all four of the breeds you are asking about. I don't think it is possible for anyone here to answer your question unless they have had long term experinece with any of these breeds, which ( I assume) counts us all out.
- By BullBoy [gb] Date 09.08.04 21:30 UTC
Really Jeff, OMG you are SOOOOOOO lucky, i would so love to see a Dogo Argentino in real life, i think they are such attractive dogs and quite fascinating, your so lucky.
- By Anwen [gb] Date 09.08.04 21:42 UTC
Well I've met a Dogo Argentino (not in this country obviously). When I say "met" we almost ran it over as its caring owner was exercising it by letting it run behind his truck up & down a steep hil (in 80-90F) Personally I thought it was one of the ugliest dogs I've ever seen. Each to their own. I also met some Pit Bulls (before the DDA). Their owners were doing some work next door & we considered employing them, but decided not to because I didn't trust them (the dogs were fine, but the owners were definately not!)
- By BullBoy [gb] Date 09.08.04 21:45 UTC
Where were you when you saw the Dogo and what was so ugly about it, theyve been described as giant Pit Bulls, is that accurate
- By Anwen [gb] Date 09.08.04 22:12 UTC
Greece. Definately not my sort of breed but in my expert (not) opinion it was like a ginormous big gone-wrong white Boxer. (I don't like white Boxers either). The Pit Bulls I saw looked like Brad Pitt compared to it! I suppose if you go for brawn, if was certainly powerful - that's the best I could say about it. Sorry.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 10.08.04 06:05 UTC
Have only seen most of these in photos and their weight always seems to have distorted their topline as if the spine has given out and the hocks and pasterns also seem very weak, mind you if many of the owners treat as you saw that is not any wonder. Must say they do not appeal to me, then they do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I like my dogs to provide me with some visual pleasure and to be active and as far as possible slobber free, so no, they would not be for me and although I believe that someone may think they are nice to look at I find it hard to think that is the main reason, they may be strong but they do not seem to be very active either.
- By sandaharr [gb] Date 10.08.04 08:00 UTC
Bull boy, having had knowledge of the american pits,I can say that the one I knew was a fabulous pet and adored the kids. They have photos of it all dressed up and in a pram, but again they are not all like that, just like most dogs have a rogue among them, only thing with these is that the rogues were the ones who ruined the breed by baiting and fighting them, sandra.
- By pyndath [gb] Date 10.08.04 09:08 UTC
so now yoyu are commenting on the post which is pathetic jackie??most of the dogoargentino are not lazy.i dont know where you saw these pics from but id like to see the link!hocks out and all.i can show you plenty of links of dogos nothing like this-and the reason they arent is that they have to run 10 miles scenting/tracking and taking down wild boar in place like argentina.sounds liike a lazy unhealthy dog to you?i think not.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 10.08.04 10:01 UTC

>> so now yoyu are commenting on the post which is pathetic jackie<<

Do not need your permission to comment on any thread I wish, and I can speak as I find as undoubtedly you will and I would hope no one will be so ill mannered as to call your thoughts pathetic.

>> most of the dogoargentino are not lazy <<

Now where did I say that, I did not nor did I say they were unhealthy in fact I did not mention any particular breed at all.  So please do me the courtesy of at least reading my posts before you decide to make personal comments about them. Thank you.
- By Zoe [gb] Date 10.08.04 10:38 UTC
I cant believe so many of you have been so aggressive to the poster!!! calling him/her PATHETIC and just being damn right rude even the admin. If you dont like the question and you have nothing useful to say and it know way affects you then just dont answer it, simple. Sorry you have been made to feel so unwelcome poster.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 10.08.04 10:43 UTC
Zoe ...there is something to be said for knowing the whole story before jumping to conclusions ;)
- By Zoe [gb] Date 10.08.04 10:50 UTC
jumping to conclusions?? anyone reading this post that has no idea what your on about is going to think you are all being rude!! Instead of just telling me im jumping to conclusions why dont you try explaining it?? Do you not want any new members to join any more, because reading posts like these will surly put them off!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 10.08.04 11:08 UTC
I think you should have more faith in Admin. :)

If you read the comment by Admin you may just realise that this post wasn't entirely unexpected.

There are people around who have little better do with their time than to try and stir up people on forums, they tend to make a habit of this ...coming back again and again.
- By Zoe [gb] Date 10.08.04 11:14 UTC
So surely just ignoring them is the best way if you know its a troll? and admin for starters should be on top of that so instead of replying he/she should delete it. Also as i said, any new members reading this post will think how rude everyone is and wont want to come back, i dont want that.
