I didn't know whether to post this under Idle Chat or General ... Clover, aged nearly 12, is breathing very heavily this evening. We've only been walking the dogs in the early morning when it's been reasonably cool, and not at all in the afternoon (they have the run of downstairs, and the backdoor's permanently open when we're in so they can get into the garden whenever they want). She's wagging her tail when we talk to hr, but I'm not happy ...

Fraid I'm no use whatever with your question - but I hope that she is OK.

Hope shes ok jeangenie, mine are panting too. you could try placing a cold wet flannel over her head and holding it there for a while I do this sometimes with my bitch Fen. Will she get up? and is she drinking?

Hi JG the weather is hot though sure she'll be fine, how about trying what I used to with my oldies a lilo filled with water rather than air? very very cooling.

Hope she's fine soon Karen

It does seem especially humid tonight JG, hope that is all it is, I've been leaving the patio doors open a bit at night to keep the air flowing through which the dogs seem to appreciate, hope she settles soon, Hayley

How is she now JG?

She's not herself, Chloe. I'm not a happy mummy. She's never done this before ...

Phoebe can get very restless in the heat and pants and throws herself on the floor but can't relax... is she drinking and going to the loo Ok? Is she dehydrated?

She's drinking okay (not wanted to go for a wee, but she won't do that till I turn off the TV!). But it's the first time in her life I've seen her pant with her mouth open. Something's different.

I walked my two Bullmastiffs around an hour and half ago, and they were panting and breathing heavily during the walk and when they got back, and they are both flat out now. Its hot for us, so i cant imagine how all our dogs feel in this hot weather, its more than likely the heat, i would also go with a cool flannel, as thats what i do with our dogs, if i think they are too hot, my Bulldogs also go though ice cubes in their water by the dozen, to help keep them cool. Could try some putting some ice cubes in her water.
Hope shes okay.

Hi JG

Not wanting to worry you but if you are not happy a trip to the vets first thing in the morning would be the thing. You know what "right" with your dog more than anyone else in the world, trust your instinct.

Hope she's fine by the time you read this though. :)

Morning JG - any news?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 09.08.04 16:25 UTC
Thankfully she seems fine today. She had a few episodes of the heavy breathing last night, and I'm watching her carefully. She wasn't panting as if she was hot - more like not being able to catch her breath, which reminded me of the symptoms of congestive heart disease. I've got my eye on her ...

Excellent - I'm pleased that she seems better :)

Its Ok your dog is sufferring from extremely mild heat exhaustion but don't worry most dogs get this in hot weather, My dog is a jack russel cross and she sometimes has this problem i give her very cold water and hold a cloth to her head to stop the heat from getting to her.

Welcome to the Forum Laydee Krazee :)

JeanGenie has bred and owned dogs for quite a while so I think if it were hot exhaustion, she would probably have seen it before and recognised it :) Thanks for the advice though , it will probably help other people :)

My oldest girl, Kali, was doing this. I took her to the vets and he said he had been inundated with dogs with these symptoms over the past week or so ;) . It's usually caused by the heat, but not in Kali's case. She's had mammary tumours removed in the past and he is worried she may have secondary growths on her lungs, as she has an irregular breathing pattern. If you're worried I'd suggest a quick trip to the vet.

Hope she's ok.  Are her lymph nodes up?
