Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / calming down of 13 month old laborador
- By Guest [gb] Date 06.08.04 19:30 UTC
i have brought a choc labrador and it is very hyper.

if theres anything on the floor she thinks its hers and a massive chase occurs to get the item back.

she can be fine sometimes and then she`ll have a 5 min blast where she jumps up the settee and jumps up to the windows. and runs wild up and down the room.

she as chewed a few bits of wallpaper as well.

she is 13 months and i dont think she`s been trained at all for anything, im trying but is it to late to train her.

she pulls very badly on the lead and jumps up everyone that passes, she`s a pain

all tips needed, please

It's never too late to train a dog, but the older they are, the more bad habits they've learned, so it is harder work. She sounds like a perfectly normal dog that has been left to run wild. How long have you had her? How much training are you doing with her? How much exercise are you giving her? What are you feeding her?

Please could you register with the Forum (it's free!) so that you can answer questions, and get the best advice.

hi thanks for the replies, i have took your advice and registerd.

in answer to your questions.

How long have you had her? I have had her for about 3 weeks

How much training are you doing with her? just doing basics like trying to get her to stop pulling when out on lead and general things around the house like saying no ect when she picks things up, and shes only just understanding the word sit

How much exercise are you giving her? she as 2 good walks a day and then general plays in between during the day

What are you feeding her? started giving her pedagree chum but she wasn`t really eating that well and pedagree biscuits and same was happening. now she eats and eats it very well a dry food thats a chicken and rice mix, i mix sometimes with a bit of warm water or gravy.

all help is needed, many thanks

Hi Tammy! At only 3 weeks she is still settling in with you, but I would suggest you find a good training club near you (have a look here for a list of reputable trainers) to get you pointed in the right direction.

Some foods are implicated in hyper-activity (and you have probably done well in getting her off Pedigree Chum - it's never suited any of my dogs); you can name the brand you're feeding on this site, so don't worry about that! However labradors are an active breed, and don't start acting like staid grown-ups till they're several years old.

Have you any idea of her background before you took her on? (Being a cynic, "child's allergy" means "we didn't bother training her and now she's a problem")

I'm delighted you've joined us - you sound like the sort of person who'll make a great dog-owner.

hi and welcome to the forum. What is your little lab called? I have a 3 month male chocolate lab. He is called max and this site is really excellent there is so many experienced people who always have a good answer for our problems and I am learning loads!

Hi and Welcome

You've only got you lab 3 weeks so there are a lot of settling in issues. My labs have their mad half hour every day and one is 5 years old. I just ignore it.

You mentioned the food your dog eats. I find any of the supermarket type stuff is not suitable for labs. I feed mine on a mix of Jame Wellbeloved, and raw food and it does not in any way promote hyper activity. Labs love fish and I give mine sardines, salmon and tuna (tinned in oil), together with stuff like cauliflowers, corn and brocolli. Mine also like tripe, and whilst I find it revolting my butcher is very good and bags it in meal size portions for me.

Your dog sounds qutie normal to me - you just need to work on connecting with the dog and once you've bonded it is such a rewarding experience.

Hope this helps

In the meantime, don't leave anything on the floor!!!! What fun, good luck x

And never chase her you are turning her taking things into a game. Try to make sure that there is nothing on the floor that will harm her, and if she takes it show no interest what so ever, after a few times she will loose interest in it and just drop it for you to pick up latter.
