- By Guest [gb] Date 06.08.04 17:55 UTC
HI wanting a 15" or below agility dog-puppy as soon as love all the small breeds, but cant decide which breed!! coat length does not matter.....

one thing i want the dog to be preety, (sad aint it) but then i can do companion shows too, with preetiest bitch or hansomist dog..

Dog has to be highly active, highly intelligent, eager to please, and 15" or below.

CAN ANY ONE HELP!!!

What about a papillon? although they are really hard to get hold of they are georgeous and the only toy breed listed in the top ten most intelligent dogs in the world and they are really good at agility :D
Try going to some show and talking to different breeder they generaly all are friendly just wait till they have been in the ring before talking to them. :)

good luck,  sarah xxx

Hi guest,

You asked for a 15" and under dog? I'm guessing its cos you want to do "mini" agility? Well if you look on some agility websites you'll see that the KC are set to change many things for agility next year, and bring the height categories in line with FCI. So mini's are 13.75" and under, midi are 13.75 - 17" and standards are anything over.

So for a mini dog next year- I'd go for a sheltie, and hope it doesn't grow over 13.75".  Very eager to please etc etc. Could also show it. However probably quite likely it will grow over height, and become midi.
Border Terriers and Paps are becoming very common now, both lovely dogs.

If you wouldn't mind a midi (now to become medium) then you could have an even wider range of choice!

What about a German Spitz or  a Japanese Spitz - all very pretty agile dogs which should do well in agility.

Or a Norweigan Buhund ? they are quite free moving and agile - not quite as 'pretty'  IMO but a nice breed. Shiba Inu's are good too but very stubborn to train I believe, Lots of the terrier breeds ( Fox,Welsh, Lakeland ) would do well once trained or perhaps the best to go for would be a shetland sheepdog - beautiful to look at, very bright and easy to train.

Good luck !

American cockers - much underused in the UK for this sort of thing (they do fantastically well in agility and obedience in the USA), Min Schanuzer, Min Poodle, Sheltie,   all cute, agile and bright.

Most female staffordshire bull terriers are below 15 inches, they make FANTASTIC pets and are very agile, that is what i would recommend although i would also say a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a good choice, surprisingly agile for a toy dog.

We have two Staffies at our Agility club and they are the nuttiest dogs I have ever seen ! - They just charge at all the other dogs when let off the lead and completely ignore their owners commands NOT a breed I would reccommend for agility !

I do agility with my staffies, granted I haven't been for a while for several reasons, kennel cough, seasons and hot weather, but when we did they were doing fine. Toesy my male could go off lead in a matter of weeks, and his attention was on me :)  My bitch didn't go long enough to go off lead, but we'll be going back, and I'm confident she'll get it. There is another Stafford there that is doing extremly well along with his Border Collies. Also there is at least one other Stafford owner on the board who's Staffie was doing well at agility, so I don't think it's fair to brush them aside,:(  just because you know 2 that don't listen to their owners.
After all didn't East Anglia SBTC have a agility team at crufts :D  So they can't all be bad.

Mitch I stand corrected - I think that it all depends on how much work the owner is prepared to put in.

Yvonne,

Have you seen the staffie Crossguns Thong Song work? It's an absolute cracker, some staffies that I know are quite steady but this one's a rocket, done very very well in mini agility.

Some of the most highly trained dogs I know were SBTs which were qualified CDex UDex in Working Trials, worked A Obedience and did extremely well in Agility!

At a fun weekend with the dogs the agility equiptment was left overnight so just thought I would see what my Lhasa puppy would do with the tilting see saw etc. she loved it, even the tunnels. So we are going to try a bit of mini agillity with her, just for the fun of it as she was keen and thought it fun
