Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Help - what size crate for SBT?
- By poppynurse [gb] Date 05.08.04 07:58 UTC
Can any fellow staffie owners advise me on what size crate I should buy for my staffs? I plan on starting showing so need something portable but will also be used as beds at home. I've looked at a few but can't make my mind up which size would be best. Thanks.

I have previously recommended the one from Argos, but I can't do that anymore. I have had 3 of theirs in the past and found them ideal. However they obviously have a new supplier and one in the new catalogue is absolute rubbish. I bought one last Saturday, and took it back on Monday. That would be the right size though. 21X 31X24 inches.
I think I'll get the Croft one, it's a bit dearer but it'll be good.  www. croftonline.co.uk (Showman foldaway Kennels)

I've got 3 Stafford, but only 2 that I show and the same 2 sleep crates during the night.
I've acually got 3 different sizes.
The smallest is 24" long by 18" wide by 21" high.
The medium is 30" long by 21" wide by 24 high.
The biggest is 36" long 24" wide by 26" high.

My male 17 months sleeps in the big crate, my bitch 9 months sleeps in the medium crate. The small one only comes out for shows, it's not big enough for them to sleep in, or not regular. The big one is to big for us to be taking to the shows, unless we were only taking the one, for them both to get in. But I prefer them in seperate crates at shows. (Toesy sucks Rio's ears :( )
The big one's big enough for them all to get in, if need be.

Poppynurse

I bought a cage from my STaff on ebay we bought a huge 46" one for only £45 and that was brand new and brilliant quality. Although this is a bigger size than you would normal need for a Staff it suits ours lovely.
The smaller cages go for about £30

I have a 30 inch crate - this size also fits into a benching area perfectly if you ever go to a champ show :)

I wish! I've only plucked up the courage to go to companion shows so far...I keep going to open/champ shows to get the feel of them (dogless!). I can't seem to make my girls stand properly at home so goodness knows what they'd be like at a proper show - and if I use bait they sit down - my fault I know for teaching them to sit...
I live close to Newark showground so I really must pluck up the courage and give it a go!
Have just ordered two crates from Crofts, thanks everyone! :)

Do you go to Ringcraft Poppynurse ?
Just to get them used to being handled by different people :)

No I've not done ringcraft because the only one local is on a tuesday and I work most tuesdays.
My dogs are fine with people/strangers handling them - they make friends whereever we go and they are used to crowds cos they come to horse shows with us. It's the excitied behaviour in the ring that worries me - and not standing (stacking??)! I 'spose I should just take the plunge and give it a go...
