My husband is saying that there is such a thing as a miniature retriever or labrador. I cannot find anything about a miniature or smaller bred breed. It is not miniature as in toy, but he says it is a retriever that is smaller than the normal size. Has anyone heard of such a breed?

I think that maybe he is thinking about working strains of these breeds. Many tend to be smaller and and more streamlined than their show counterparts.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is substantially smaller than the Labrador and other retrievers. Height is approximately 19-20 inches for a male and 18-19 inches for a female (as a matter of comparison Border Collies are approximately 21 inches for males and females slightly less). A very attractive dog, the color is in shades of red or orange, with lighter feathering on the tail; white is permissible on the feet, tail, chest and a blaze on the face.

Otherwise, I would have to agree that the field dogs tend to be smaller in stature and more 'wiry' in body weight than the show counterparts.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club of Canada is: http://www.toller.ca/

Also came across a website that had a lot of pictures and links in the UK and is one of the breeders registered with Champdogs: http://www.tollers.com/

Hope this helps.
