Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / crate as a whelping box?
- By kerrieddbx [gb] Date 26.07.04 16:19 UTC
my girl is on day 62 and showing signs of labour, but she will only go in her crate. It is 4ftx2ft and about 21/2ft high, so is big enough. I have lined it with thick newspapers and vet bed and moved it to the corner of my office (to avoid family traffic and draughts), do you think this will be adequate? We are going to construct a puppy run off it when they are more mobile. Its just the practical side I worry about, has anyone else used a crate for whelping?

I would also line th sides, use carboard boxes and put the flaps under the metal/plastic base.  You will also need a Het Pad as there will not be enough room for a lamp.  I would also use a blanket to cover the crate to make a cave which will be cosier.

yes, the blanket idea is a good one, it makes them feel a sense of privacy. we have a large sized crate which one of our staffie bitches gave birth in quite happily, we shredded up lots of newspaper and she rummaged it all around and made herself a brilliant wee nest!

you could tape some cardboard around the inside of the cage to stop the bedding falling out as well. :-)

Thanks, Ive put a blanket over the crate, she's sleeping now :) . I'm not too sure if she is in labour or not now, she didnt eat tea last night or breakfast today, and she was sick on the sofa (wouldnt you know it :P ) . I noticed that she was breathing heavily, but I wouldnt say 'panting', and she keeps re-arranging her bedding. I reckon I'm in for a long night!

well dont you worry kerry, we'll be here for you so dont hesitate to ask if you need any help, is this your first litter?

if shes off her food, panting and making a nest, its likely she will have her puppies soon! good luck!! :-)

ps what breed is she?

Hi again, thanks for advice (I hate to keep pestering, but the champdoggers have really helped me over the last few months as I have had more than my share of doggie problems :( ). This is my first litter, although I have kept Staffies for 10 years and know the breed pretty well. I did lots of research to find the ideal mate, and have spoken to many breeders before going ahead. I doesnt matter how much literature you read, or who you talk to, when it comes to the crunch you're on your own!! Its pretty scary the first time, and also the most exciting thing, so I'm on a rollercoaster at the moment.Just hoping my girl will come through ok, and we get a healthy litter :).
