Topic Dog Boards / Health / Eye testing at CLA

Just had this done on my dog and I am amazed at the difference in the testing methods than at the opthalmic clinic. Quick look in the eye with one instemennt in contrast with ages spent with all sorts of gadgits, lenses etc. at the clinic. How can this be??

The expert opthalmologist at the game fair is a very experienced veterinary eye expert. He does this test on a daily basis to hundreds of dogs, so he knows what he is looking at. I also know the examiner in question is the only vet to have won awards for his work, which aids human patients. He won the David Cole Travel Fellowship which is normally only awarded to human doctors, he is also the expert for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
Other panellists will not see that amount of dogs privately over the course of a year, so it might take them longer. If you have doubts about the test, you can appeal and go to another pannellist, but this means you have to do this with in 28 days.

Blimey, why so defensive Polly??
I was merely sharing my experience and am interested why other specialists in the field use a range of equipment and he only used one sort. If only one type of equipment is required for this range of tests and he is very experienced then that answers my question.
Not sure why you assume I am doubting the results, actually I was very pleased that my dog passed.

Amos, I think you might have read Polly's reply wrong? I didn't read her post defensive, merely as an explantion :-)

Yes, on reading reply again I agree it wasn't defensive. Sorry

Don't worry Amos, I not worried by the reply, I was as admin said trying to explain that as the pannellist in question sees hundreds of dogs and is very qualified he can do this testing with as little fuss as possible. I have had a similar debate on another board where there was a difference of opinion and many people thought the slower examiners with more gadgets were better. I am not saying they aren't or that they are, just that they are all trained to do this and the pannellist at the game fair does more of this testing than most.
The most important thing in my opinion is that we do test our dogs and I am sure you agree. :-)
