Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / bitch wont stand

i was at a mating today with a dog that is proven and a madden bitch, all went well, the dog took a few attempts ;) as they do but after that he was fine.  then after about 10 mins in to the tie the bitch would not stand at all.  the bitches owner tried to make her stand (after been told to) but he gave up after 5 mins and left her there.  now this bitch was not on her feet at all and i decided to hold the bitch up not to hurt the dog.  i tried everything to get her on her feet and she was not having non of it.  in the end we found a box to fit under her to hold her up. (done this as she was getting to heavy to hold up) is this common?  the bitches owner wants to do another mating in 2 days but as there was a very good tie we talked him out of it (for the dogs sack).
i just wanted to know if this is common

and the dog is fine :D

I had that happen once and ended up holding her the whole time (40 min tie), thank goodness she was maybe a 12 pound boston. It was her first time as well we thought maybe that was why, second mating (35min) she did the same thing :( I was scared she would hurt my dog by trying to laydown and roll over, so I just held her in a standing position till they were done, then she literaly lifted up her legs and I ended up holding her. My dog was fine never cared, but still you never know anything could go wrong. Have never seen that happen before, thought it was weird..My breeder told me that she had a bitch that would try to roll over on her back once the dog turned, and try to push him away. She ended up holding her too.

I once helped some friends with a Newfie mating, the dog laid down & the bitch followed soon after there was no way we could hold up two 12 stone + dogs even with 4 experienced people(I held bitch stud dog owner held dog & my friend whose bitch it was was in the middle, stud dogs owner made the coffee ;))Result was three very laid back puppies

I know of a cocker bitch that wouldn't stand once tied, so both dog and bitch decided to lie down and stayed tied for 50 minutes!

Had this with one of my bitches (now retired)  She was always a little disinterested in her matings, and wanted to sit down, but on the last mating she acutally rolled over and lay down, so the dog did too!  they were perfectly happy, and tied for ovr 20 mins flat out, side by side - made the studd dog owners hubyys eyes water a bit when he walked in and saw the wiered position!
bye

well im glad im not the only 1 that has been though this then lol
we did try to get my dog to lie down but he was having non of it, when i held her she would just pick her back legs up and let me do the rest.  after about 15 mins of this i gave up and found a box, they had a 50 min tie
so things should be ok

Staffie lover,
my Jazz (SBT) had to be helped to stand too, she wanted to sit her back end down all the time, she ended up having a 15 minute tie once, and produced 7.
