Does anyone know what year dog licences were last used. I know this is a strange request,but it is to settle an argument with a non doggy friend, who said it was about 10 years ago, I think it was a lot longer. If not I was breaking the law as I have owened dogs since 1980.

I think it was around 1979 or 1980..... I remember when we were first married we had to have a dog licence... but it wasnt long before it was abolished and we didnt need one any more.

Hi - I expected the answer to be 20 years but on doing a search I have taken the following information from this site http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/research/rp98/rp98-006.pdf

"The dog licence was abolished in 1987, at which time it stood at 37 1/2p and was held by only around half of dog owners"

in that case it would mean that you wouldn't have had to buy a licence in '88! I'll never doubt you again Bec!!! :)

When I put dog licence scrapped in google most said 1988! But I will bow to the parlimentary site quoting 1987! I must admit I thought it was way befoe that too!

i got married in 1978, my morther in law bought us a pup as a present,so since then we have not bought a dog licence,and we been inthis house 21 years and i never gone to the post office to get one,so i may have been breaking the law if it was in 1988.
