Please can you share your opinions on the suitability of trailhounds as pets. How vocal are they,Will a good recall ever be achieved without the aid of a buiscuit tin and would they be happy on there own for short periods of time (2hrs max with the company of 2 year old sensible bitch). They seem such loverly dogs but would hate to take a rescue on with no hope of making the dog happy as an active pet .

Guest what breed are these hounds, most hounds that have lived all their lives in a pack environment will not be happy in the domestic situation although you may well be able to retrain them. They will need house training and it is unlikely you will get a reliable recall in most cases although there will always be exceptions. Lets face it even hounds breed for the pet home are not reliable when it comes to recall, and yes they will be vocal.

They are TRAIL HOUNDS jackie :) :)
Guest...I know several of these & most live as one of a small pack (3 or 4) but also know of one single one. Basically they will scale 12 feet fencing with their eyes closed & go off hunting at every opportunity. they do live ok as single hounds but actual day to day management is very hard unless you have land/facilities suited to a very active working hound with no recall. The girl who works for me has one & takes it trailing in cumbria (all the way from devon!!) and during the week it lives on her fathers dartmoor hill farm. It does about 30 miles a day running behind quads & horses & still runs away in the afternoon because its not worn out, so has to be chained up when not out under supervision!!!! def. not for the average household in average suburbia!!!

OK Sam, what are they, thought any scent hound could be used to trail, if they are a special developed breed what are they like and where can I find details of them.

They are a very distinctive breed of hound...like a x between a foxhound & a harrier is best way to describe them! no idea where you can find out about them...just get yourself to cumbria & watch them trailing, its great fun :)
Thinking about it, there is a TH assoc. because they bought some images from me for their website, so I will have root around my invoices for you!! :)

Thanks for the link, it would seem that they can be any hound or hound cross, which is what I asked in the first place, what breed or what cross as it does make a difference as to how well they will settle into a home and how noisey they are likely to be.

The trail hounds I know are a very distinct type and would be most offended if they were considered "any hound or hound cross" :(
they breed very true to type and with very carefully researched pedigrees, although like most dogs, they were originally developed from several breeds. of course there will always some folk who race their x-breed hounds which are usually based on a fellhound x foxhound....but a true trail hound is a very distinctive little chap. :)

Sorry Sam, only going by the link we were given where they look different. Will have to ask around and find out more.
I know of many trailhounds that make great and loving members of the family.
They arent any more vocal than any other dog and recall can be excellent , depending on your training of course :)
Like any dog ...make sure they are suitable for your family , the rescue will be able to help you with this.
They settle quickly and well into a home environment and are very quiet happy members.
Contact Eileen at the Trailhound Trust she will be very happy to talk with you about them.
