Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Autarky - my opinion
- By kazz Date 07.07.04 15:10 UTC
Autarky have been feeding it to Sal for 3 months now after changing from Burns. And I must say she is really looking well on it. Autarky is a good price too. :)

can you order it online ?? I have looked around the site but can't find a link to purchase ???
- By kazz Date 07.07.04 20:35 UTC
Hi,

I don't know if you can buy it on line my local "pet/dog food shop" stocks it. :)

Tesco sells it too!
- By Ussher [gb] Date 07.07.04 21:11 UTC
You can also get it from Costco for only £9.99 for 15kg.  It is VAT free.  I don't work for Costco honestly!!
- By inca [gb] Date 07.07.04 21:12 UTC
I don't know of a costco ...any idea's how much tesco sell a 15kg bag for ?
- By mattie [gb] Date 08.07.04 08:51 UTC
isnt it the autarky gusto the supermarkets sell? if so that in my opinion is just a cheap ordinary  food we have started to use the Autarky  Adult and  mature/light and may become agents if I am happy with results.
Its 100% natural food and I belive you dont have to feed quite as much as its basically a working dog food (No VAT) Im happy with it so far
- By peilady [gb] Date 08.07.04 09:03 UTC
I think you're right Mattie, our Tesco's doesn't stock it, but when I quizzed Autarky about their "Gusto" they were very reserved about it, and its definately not classed as a natural food, like Autarky is, Autarky doesn't contain Ethoxiquin, but Gusto does, and that came directly from the lady I spoke to at Autarky.  My lot just love the Summer variety. Never a peice left.  I've used it now for about 4 months and can say I am very pleased with the results, I've found you feed less and there is a lot less "outage"..LOL to clear up to...LOL
Totally Recommended

I once rang autarky to ask about 'gusto' and they said that Autarky is a premium dog food , is gluten free, and has all those added herbs.  Whereas, Gusto is still a quality food (their words) but is not gluten free and doesnt contain the herbs.   Gusto is around £4.99 for 10kg  and Autarky £13 for 15kg , although my Tesco doesnt stock the big sacks of Autarky ,just the titchy ones at £3.45 each. :)
- By tohme Date 08.07.04 12:55 UTC
Why does their website not specify actual ingredients and quantities?
- By Blue Date 08.07.04 13:58 UTC
I wondered that also.
- By inca [gb] Date 08.07.04 14:13 UTC
so there are different types ???? which should i be trying out ???
- By archer [gb] Date 08.07.04 14:19 UTC
Stick to  the premium type...called Autarky, not Gusto. Its still cheap but has had good results with a lot of peoples dogs...including mine.
Try the smaller bags from Tescos first and then if you get on with it you can buy a sack. They have got a website but don't know the addy!
Autarky on'y do the one premium food ..but in 3 'stages'. Spring for pups ,summer fr adults,Autumn for older dogs.

Here's the Autarky website.  Sorry can't do links, so please just cut & paste the addy into your browser.

thanks for the info ...don't think you can order direct from them but i will try an small bag and see how we get on .....any one know where is the best place to order from for home delivery in the south ( Portsmouth)
- By peilady [gb] Date 08.07.04 14:55 UTC
Inca

If you call them back, they will give you the contact details of the closest supplers to you.  When I did, the told me to call one number first, as this was the cheapest company that sold it in my area, £12.50 for 15kgs. So worth a call back to Autarky :-)
- By inca [gb] Date 08.07.04 16:25 UTC
I haven't rang them as there is not a number on the site I have emailed but have yet had no reply...if you have a number for them can you message me ...would be most grateful:) £12.5o thats a great price ...
- By rosiesgirl [in] Date 08.07.04 16:55 UTC
There is a list of stockists on the website.

Been using it for 3 months now - both dogs love it and the price is great, half what I was paying before.
- By peilady [gb] Date 08.07.04 20:22 UTC
Hi Inca

I have pm'd you the contact details.
- By mattie [gb] Date 08.07.04 20:31 UTC
we are thinking of being agents as they give 30 days grace from delivery and if you cant sell it they take it back.
and I belive it is 100 percent natural which some foods arent and if some foods say meat included they dont speciafy what meat could be horse or anything but autarky just use chicken
- By peilady [gb] Date 08.07.04 20:51 UTC
Mattie

How far away are you from Burnley now ? As I have to go over to Accrington to collect mine at £12.50 a bag.  You may be closer, let me know if you start to stock it.
- By mattie [gb] Date 08.07.04 20:54 UTC
are you coming to our fun show saturday details on event on here yes we will stock it but the price you get it is good

I am in chorley
- By peilady [gb] Date 08.07.04 20:59 UTC
I'd have loved to have come Mattie, but we have a family gathering on Saturday, otherwise I'd have been there with bells on mate. I could have brought a smile to everyones faces with a few odd ball wrinklies....LOL

Adult ingredients:
Maize, Chicken Meat Meal, Rice, Chicken Fat, Carrot and green leaf vegetables, whole linseed, beet pulp, mixed herbs and spices, yucca, yeast.

Depends what you define as  "natural" I suppose; natural as opposed to synthetic or natural for a dog.

Like most foods the main ingredient in the adult variety is maize(tryptophan deficient cereal), linseed may cause itchies in some dogs, beet pulp is a filler and yeast may be problematic to some dogs re fungal overgrowths etc.

As the herbs and spices have all been cooked I would question their value.

I went to a behvourist's not long ago and she didn't think much of Autarky at all and really put me off using it.  I can only get the small bags from Tesco's nowhere else seems to stock it, so I've decided not to bother with it.  I'll keep to my mince, chicken rice etc.
- By kazz Date 10.07.04 11:09 UTC
Ahh I also feed "beef" raw. Chicken either grilled or roast, fish fresh (either coley, cod etc) usually steamed. Mince with veggies and gravy (usually boil the mince though) even though I mince it myself. Rice boiled with almost every meal if not brown bread, or biscuit. Also pilchards and sardines regularly. Sometimes tuna. She also has liver or kidneys sometimes. Once in a while scrambled eggs.
And if I buy it "tripe" but fresh from the butcher :) and occasionally when I get "ox heart" or "Ox Cheek" all of which I must say she does like.
She also has a small breakfast of either weetabix or porridge. As well as cod liver oil.

Also a roast dinner same as ours every Sunday ;) And of course the Autarky.

Sorry did not make this clear but the burns is very expensive and I got fed up of the dust in the bottom of the bag. Sal enjoys the Autarky. But there again she does get quite a variation in her diet :)

I'm a keen Autarky advocate and my dogs have done well on it, so are our puppies growing happily.  I find the company good to deal with and very helpful and the food is at a price that I am very happy to pay.  To me, I am not so worried whether the herbs have been cooked, or the ingredients are listed on the website, but to see happy dogs with shiny coats that will eat a bowl of food rather than leave it is satisfaction enough.

Some of us Tohme have to balance the cost of our dogs food with other things in our lives, it doesn't mean we love or care for them less, it means we do the best we feel we are able.
- By rosiesgirl [gb] Date 10.07.04 13:29 UTC
Excellent post jackyjat.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

:D @ Jackyjat
- By kath_barr [gb] Date 10.07.04 14:41 UTC
Jackyjat, I don't think Tohme was implying that you don't care for your dogs, that certainly wasn't the impression I got. :)  It's interesting to hear others opinions whether we agree with them or not and Tohme's post raises valid points that could be very helpful to some owners.

valid point jackyjat :)
- By Chesters [gb] Date 10.07.04 21:53 UTC
Hi Kazz,  I would be interested to know where you get your 'ox cheek' from since I can't get it near me. Its excellent meat amd would make a change for the dogs.
- By kazz Date 11.07.04 20:25 UTC
Oh it's a blinking nightmare getting it. :) Eventually I spoke to my butcher, because it was getting immpossibe to buy and now I get it direct from him I admit it looks odd with the "little" bitslike hair folicles attached but God does she love it :) try asking a small one man band butchers

I am convinced enough to try it on my dog.
I checked the stockists and my local pet shop, 5 minutes down the road sell it! I was expecting it to be a nightmare... perhaps it's a sign, lol.
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 13.07.04 20:15 UTC
After reading all of the posts on here I did try Autarky and tried a big bag as I believe in giving a food a try.  I was on Burns and have to say am going back to it.  Compared to Burns there is more poo and it is sloppy.  I did swop over gently over about 10 days.  Their coats have also lost some of their sheen.  Sorry but Autarky just wasnt for my dogs.  Burns is now here to stay!
- By inca [gb] Date 13.07.04 21:02 UTC
thats a shame mine are doing great on it , but i do add bran to their food as well
- By Chesters [gb] Date 14.07.04 22:32 UTC
Hi Kazz, tried but failed. Apparently it is banned in this country and all EU Countries. Anything from the head is banned except tounge . I've even tried my dog food supplier  - what a waste of good meat.  My local butcher and supplier tell me that your butcher must get it from non eu countries.
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 15.07.04 06:43 UTC
"After reading all of the posts on here I did try Autarky and tried a big bag as I believe in giving a food a try. I did swop over gently over about 10 days"

Are you sure you swapped over slowly DVNBiker?  This thread wasn't started until 7th July!

Obviously one food isn't going to suit every dog but I firmly believe Autarky is one to try.
- By mattie [gb] Date 15.07.04 07:36 UTC
there has to be a reasonable amount of time for a dog to adjust to a new food I am using it in rescue as our bills this year are quite high and I have to say i am very pleased with results so far there was sloppy poo at first but not now
- By Brainless [gb] Date 15.07.04 07:55 UTC
Some of the herbs used do have lazative and purging effects.  My friend tried it with hers and they went soft on her, can't say I noticed this when mine first tried it, but they have very firm poos on the half and half mix of it with Arden Grange, but were equally good on it neat when I first tried it to see how it worked for them.
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 15.07.04 17:20 UTC
jackyjat

this is a thread that has come up over and over again for some months now so it wasnt this thread that prompted me to try it all but one from when I first started coming on here about three months ago
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 15.07.04 20:54 UTC
OK sorry, I just got the wrong end of the thread!! :-)
