Topic Other Boards / Foo / Trojan virus - help
- By Sunbeams [gb] Date 07.07.04 09:17 UTC
Hi, when I ran Norton scan yesterday it came up with 2 'Download Trojan' viruses in my Temporary Internet Files, but couldn't delete them, so they're still there.  I've not noticed any computer problems, so the only thing I'm worrying about - as a complete computer novice! - is that it's nothing to do with anyone being able to access my online bank account or visa account.  If anyone knows, please tell me and put my mind at rest!

go to where it says file-edit-view-favs-tools-help along the top, click on tools-drop down has internet options click on this. You will see temp internet files click on delete files that should sort out your problem.

Alternate option is to go this route- start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup ( will come up with  disc cleanup or something like) wait till box appears with list of options some with ticks in, click ok that will also get rid of your temp files etc depending which squares has a tick in it.

Hi Bazza,
Thanks for that info!  I'm not sure about the first option - as I can't see a Tools along the top of the internet toolbar - but I've managed to delete the files with the disk clean-up.  They are now in the Recycle Bin - which of course I can't find anywhere to empty it!  When we had Windows 98, the recycle bin had an icon on the desktop, but now we've got XP, there's no sign of it!  Do you know where it would be?!  Then once I've emptied the recycle bin I'll run Norton Scan again.

Oh I had these and had to deleate them the other day!  Is the problem you can't deleat them because they are running?  If it is then do a "ctrl, alt & delete" and find the name on the window (close down or something) and then end program!  Then deleate the virus from the file!

Complecated but how I got rid of my "trojan Virus"

Hi Ice Queen,
Yes, probably it is running - but I haven't a clue what it's supposed to be doing!  Have managed to get rid of my temporary files into the recycle bin, so fingers crossed that's got rid of it..!

Hilda, The recylcle din in XP home I found by going into Start, My Computer, when in the My COmputer window theres a row of buttons ON ours its 3rd one in (a yellow folder with green arrow pointing upwards) called "up"  This takes you to the Desktop where you shoudl find the recycle bin!!!

Well thast on your Xp Machine:)

Good luck

you can drag the  recycle icon  to the main screen easily so it appears there. Can I suggest getting a book called "Windows for Dummies" the XP version  if that is the windows version you have on your computer, you will find it very helpful. PC World usually has a copy, in it the explanations on how to do things are put in terms even I can understand.

Usually, to get rid of trojans, you need to run Norton with your computer running in "Safe Mode". Close the computer down then reboot and as you do repetedly press F8 function key. When the boot menu comes up select "Safe Mode". When this is up and running (It will say "Safe Mode" in the corner of the screen) run a scan with Norton and you should find it will then be able to delete the viruses. I've had these several times in the last few months.

Hi John,
I did know about starting in Safe Mode, but tried it several times and it didn't work - got as far as the screen where you click on username, but it froze there every time.  I'll try and get a copy of the book Bazza mentioned!
