Are there any over the counter drops for my babies eyes
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.07.04 12:10 UTC
Eyes are far too fragile and precious to take chances with. Get the correct prescription from the vet.

Not only that, but when I took my dog to the vets for the same reason a month or so ago, she did a lengthy investigation, swabs, microscope tool thingys, coloured dye etc before issuing the drops.

Admittedly it is expensive, cost me over £30 for the drops but I had the comfort in knowing that scratches, foreign objects, serious infections had been ruled out.

The gunk has come back twice now (but I never manage to remember to do it twice a day for ten days so its my fault) but the drops have lasted well so we would have spent the £30 in return visits by now anyway.  Guest, if you can, let me know how you get on because we're going to have to take Millie back about her eye gunk so I would be interested in what you get told/supplied with if you do go to the vets about it.

I used to perform eye tests on staff when working in a university health and safety office. Whenever anyone said they didn't want to spend the money on glasses they needed, my boss would tell them "you only get one pair of eyes, look after them".

Same applies to dogs...;-)

If its just dirt then you can bathe them using cooled boiled water & cotton wool balls. Make sure you wash your hands first and only use each cotton wool ball once gently clense the eye being carefull not to touch the eye its self. This works for me as it keeps the eyes clean.

Gunk could be conjuctivitous (sp) Get her down the vets for a vets opinion and some drops over the vets counter!!!!  If its not the above then maybe you are looking at something in the eye, if so the vet will find it, when it comes to your dogs health you shouldn't be too worried about money, health always comes first!!!! :)  Part of owning a dog!

Normally I would agree with everything said above but you said "babies" so is this a pup and if so is it teething?  They often get very mucky eyes around this time.  If it is anything else then a vet trip is advisable

I would echo the other comments.  My Staffy had gunk in one of his eyes, and has just been diagnosed with dry eye.  The sooner you get to the vets and get started with drops the better if it is this condition.  If it is dry eye blindness could be the result if untreated.

my boxer had dry eye but it is usually age related.the other thing was a ulcerated eye, which was treated with drops for a few weeks but didn't improve.he ended up going in to have the surface of his eye cleaned (minor op) and having his 3rd eye lid stitched up to protect his eye while it healed.this can be upto a month later before they open it and have a look.i would take to the vets again and get this checked out,the last thing you want is things to get worse untill surgery is needed.
we don't know what caused it could be the fact he used to rub himself on the bed and some thing scratched his eye but you dont know untill it starts to weep.they just put drops in which turn the eye green to show any ucler.

My puppy (who is now 20 weeks) gets mucus in his eye sometimes (mainly in the morning), I took him to the vet who tested for dry eye but said he was okay, the vet did say that it can be to do with teething as "Kerioak" in her email said.  Mind you he did recommend some eyedrops for him to use if I need.
