Topic Dog Boards / Health / when should i worry? (testicles)

Hi All,

I've recently bred my 1st litter (not advertising, i'm keeping all the pups!)and took the pups for their 1st vaccination a few days ago. The vet seemed concerned that the male has no testicles at the moment - i had noticed, but was not concerned as i believed this was normal in our breed (Siberian Husky), and that they'd 'drop' in the next few months.

His concern has now got me worrying! Am i right to worry, or is the vet mistaken? He even mentioned operating if they're not down soon, a suggestion i'm certainly not happy with!(pups are 9 weeks old today!) A couple of experienced breeders i've spoken to have said change your vet, what do you folks think?

Cheers, Karen

I would ageee, at 9 weeks you would need a very relaxed pup with a very expert vet to reliably find the testicles each time.

We imported a pup at 9 1/2 weeks.  He was certified as entire wehn eh flew out, but on his check in quarantine they had a real job to find them, as they did when he had his second jabs at 12 weeks, but once put doen back in his run the kennel maid was able to feel them fine.

I thought a felt them a couple of weeks ago (very small, like petit pois!), but could've been mistaken. I haven't noticed them since, but wasn't really looking until the vet mentioned them.

Hi, dont worry yet. I have an 11 month old husky boy and one testicle STILL HAVENT DROPPED. His dad's didnt drop till he was 16 months old. However this is a rare scenario and if they dont drop then he will be castrated. I would sugested taken your dog to other vets and get afew opinions. But nine weeks is nothing to worry about.  Hope all ends well.

I have Siberian huskies, too! Yay! Congrats on your litter! *is excited to find fellow husky lovers*

I've always been told to not worry until a least a year old. All dogs are different, just like bitches are when they whelp. You never know what and when everything is going to happen. As your little boy is so young, don't you dare worry about it. Don't let your vet operate so soon. I'd give him at least a year and if they haven't dropped by then, it might be time to worry. Course its all a matter of opinion. :D

Would not worry for another 12 months, think your vet must be looking for something to do. Wonder why the Sibes drop late, mind you I recon if I came for the artic circle I would be a bit loathed to let them out into the cold too

I wouldn't worry about it, the puppy is still really young and they can also pull them back up if cold or scared....I too would look for another vet cause this one would worry my if he wants to do an op on a 9 week old pup :(

Thanks Everyone,

You've managed to put my mind at rest, i thought the vet was being a bit premature and you've all confirmed it for me! He's leaving the practice soon, hopefully his replacement won't be so 'scalpel happy' - either way, i won't think about operating till he's older than 12 months.

The comment about keepin' 'em warm in the Arctic makes a lot of sense! Hadn't thought of that.

Cheers, Karen

Hi
If you sit pup on your lap with his bum on your legs and his back against your tummy, roll him a little so he is scunched up, his testicle area needs to be pointing towards the sky - hope i've explained that well, anyway if you fiddle a bit you should be able to feel both as little peas.
Give it a try
