Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pyoderma and prednisolone?
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 01.07.04 18:08 UTC
Wonder if anyone has experience of this:

Damson has been on prednisolone for about 6 weeks  for treatment of ruptured ear drum causing loss of co-ordination,(at least, that's the most likely diagnosis).   It was tailed off as per vet's instructions at the end of last week, and by last Sunday a pyoderma materialised, which flared up badly yesterday.

We were in the vet's today, and he is running a pretty comprehensive series of bloods.

Assuming that the prednisolone has lowered her immune system, I don't know what the future holds.

Would appreciate anybody who might point me to any websites about this, as I've been Googling to little avail.

So sorry to hear this Jo. Sorry I can't help but it's something I've never come up against.Have you any idea where the ruptured ear drum occured? I know our dogs get into some very noisy situations but. . . . . Plenty get a hearing loss with age, and that includes me as well but not usually a ruptured ear drum.

Best wishes, John

Have had experience of this but the immunity can recover given time with out medication.

Jackie - any idea of the best things to help boost her immune system - I could buy out the whole Healthspan catalogue for her and still not hit on the right one!

John - thanks for the sympathy!    A good friend recently had three of her flatcoats tested, and all three had no eardrums.   Two picking-up dogs, and one not yet entered.   Scary - she was awfully upset.

Sorry Jo I don't, it does seem to recover on it's own but takes time. Beleve there are products on the market and think that Thone would be able to tell you what to try. Must say I am not into suppliments and only try them if they are suggested by someone who knows what they are talking about and that is not me.

Vits C & E daily, start the C off about 500 per day & work up till bowel tolerance, echinacea or spirulina, crushed clove of garlic daily. You can get echinacea in tincture form from Neals or Nelsons. Nettles are good, pick the leaves, pour boiling water over them leave to stand with cover over them. when cooled pour some over food.

Christine, spain.

Cheers, Christine - will start cooking - we've certainly got plenty of nettles round here - unfortunately they're not baby nettles any more, they're grandfathers!!!    Will send off for the others.

Hi Terri

I wondered if swimming had anything to do with it.   She suddenly went off swimming before we realised what had happened, so you could well be right.

How are you yourself?    And the little sprog?

Love Jo
