Can you sudenly become allergic to things after having no reaction to them previously ?

The last couple of days the inside of my mouth has become very saw and Itchy almost burning after eating certain foods, the strange thing is its been completely different foods.

The first time it was Hazle nuts yesterday and my mouth was burning and itchy for about an hour afterwards, I've just eaten an Apple which I washed really well and my mouth has gone exactly the same.

It just seems strange that its happened with two things I've eaten loads of in the past with no reaction and now my lips are starting to swell slightly so i'm off for a drink of something.

I've noticed the same with some apples, especially if I haven't washed them properly. Very strange ...

Yes you can become allergic to something after a great deal of exposure.

If your lips are swelling etc I really would go and see a doctor ASAP as you may need some professional help.

Definintely, both my sister and I became allergic to nuts when I was about 8 and she was 10.  My reaction is just being sick and my throat tightening, where as my sister could die and has to carry round an adrenalin injection pen at all times.
I remember one day we ate a flap jack and were both violently sick and ever since then it's been no nuts for us :D

Hi Steve,

It sounds like you have what I have which is hayfever. I posted on here about this not long ago! The allergy is actually triggered by an allergy to birch trees but can develop into oral allergy syndrome. I have been allergic to hazelnuts for a long time - before the hayfever bothered me, then I got the hayfever and then the apple allergy(it doesn't matter if you wash/peel them - the burning and swelling is the same). There are approximately 1 million people allergic to apples in the UK - so it's not that uncommon really. There are other foods that you may also become allergic to so be careful.  If you do a google search for apple allergy you should get the info you need. Good luck! :)

Yes you can become allergic to something after eating/using it for years. A friend of mine is highly allergic to bananas in the same way as some nut allergy sufferers.  Mine are usually to do with detergents things that come into contact with my skin.  I know there are places you can have allergy testing done but not sure of the cost.

Michelle :)

Thanks everyone, I do get hayfever very early on in the season so you might well be right Rachel.

I think I'll just have to keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse I'll see my doctor.

Thanks again

Hi Steve,
I don't think you should wait to see what happens as it sounds very much like you are heading for an anaphalaxis episode
look here
It can be a reaction to something that you were fine with before but can be life threatening, you would be as well to get it checked out with your doc who can easily send you for allergy testing and meanwhile you should carry piriton with you wherever you go.
Sorry for sounding dramatic but my son developed a severe reaction to our guinea pigs after we had had them for about 4 years and we nearly lost him to anaphalaxic shock.
Good luck,
Linda

I've definately developed something concerning egg which I never had before - trying to work out if its an allergy.  For about 27 years I have eaten egg with no problem, in the past couple of years though I noticed i get indigestion after eating it, and it worsened and worsened until now if I eat an egg, I have to go and lay down in bed for about 4 hours with excruciating stomach ache.  Of course, because this is only recent I am not out of the habit of eating egg yet - I only remember when I'm halfway through - and because egg represents itself in many styles it makes it harder to remember.  I nearly always remember not to eat fried egg/boiled egg but 3 weeks ago I had scrambled egg on toast...doh!  Two weeks ago I had an egg mayonnaise sandwich....doh!  Saturday I was three quarters of the way through a Scotch egg...doh (fortunately I only had mild indigestion for about half an hour so I may not have to give up Scotch eggs just yet as it was definately worth it!)

Its just odd that I have eaten eggs for 29 years and it has only just started giving me problems, particularly as the after-effects are so severe now.  Odd....
