Most of West Lothian is former mining country - the scenery is lovely in the summer but a bit gloomy in the winter.:D
The area is quite in demand at the moment due to the price of houses in Edinburgh - as a result there are a lot of new builds in most of the bigger towns.
If I remember right from the last time I was there, the High Street has mostly independent retailers and it doesn't take long to go from one side of the town to the other.
Plenty of walkable countryside around - good access to Edinburgh, Glasgow and the South.
