Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / toilet after whelping - advice please

I cant get my girl to go for a wee, and she had her last pup quite some time ago. She just goes ballistic at the thought of leaving the pups. She is drinking plenty and pups are fine, but I am worried we will get water infection if she doesnt go soon.  Have taken her out on lead in garden and she still fights to get back to the babies.

Any advice please

thanks

I've always had to put my bitches on a lead and force them out to wee and poo for a few days after they've whelped. It sounds cruel, but it has to be done, because it is vital that the bitch relieves herself frequently. As soon as she has 'performed' you can let her off the lead to run back to her babies. She'll soon learn to trust you that her treasures will be safe and will get easier.

Me too - make sure the door is left open and she has a clear way back - she will soon learn you do not want to keep her away from her babies.

I darnt say how long it took her to go...it was really a lifetime!!

Evnetually she did go and is now happily going off to the loo when she needs to.

thanks for the advice, however, she almost took my husband off his feet fighting to get back to her babies..........

it took me one cup of tea to get her going  LOL
