Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Roan or B & W - How can you tell?

Can someone please remind me (in simple terms) how you can tell if black and white pups will change to roan?  Is one dominant over the other in genetic terms?  I know I have read somewhere some complicated instructions for the colour change of the pads, but I can't seem to track the info down now.

I'm confused and one day feel they will be roan like mum then one day am convinced they will be B&W!  Currently there are spots of black randomly on pads.

Blue roan is dominant over black & white but you can get both colours in the same litter which makes things interesting :-) Generally, black & whites stand out as they are always very pink around the muzzle when born & you're right, the foot pads will have pink & black patches whereas blues have all black foot pads. Sometimes it takes a few weeks for the pads to go completely black. In one of our last litters, we had a dog I thought was a black & white until he was about 5 weeks old when his feet pigmented over & more ticking started to appear on his body - just as well we don't send off the registrations too early ;-)
