My dog is 8yrs old.  We feel he would benefit from having a companion.  He is very aggressive towards other male dogs but recently a friend brought over his small bitch(pug/cross) and my dog was besotted with her.  He was very gentle and protective towards her and seemed distraught for a couple of days afterwards.
Could you please advise me if it would be a good idea to get a female Weimaraner puppy (my dog is a Weimaraner), would I have to have him neutered or her speyed

Be aware that if your entire male dog is already very aggressive to other male dogs this could increase if and when he "runs" with a bitch!  Your puppy will become "his" bitch and he will guard her (as you have already noted being "protective").  This can be a problem if you exercise them together once she is old enough.

If you did get a companion then either one should be neutered to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

I would think extremely carefully before embarking on getting a bitch puppy in the circumstances you have described.
