Can anyone tell me, if u were just walking along with your dog and another came from no-where and attacked your dog, what would be the most affective way of getting the dog off yours ( if there is one ) this hasnt happened but i would always like to be prepared just in case , my rosie is a little westie , thanks for any replys
Our bitch was attacked some time ago and I the way I got the other dog off her was to put my finger inside its mouth and forcefully push down onto the tounge. Have heard other methods but they are a bit extreme for so called dog lovers to be doing to another dog.

When Jennifer was attacked it grabbed the dogs chain collar and twisted it round and round so the dog had to let go of my puppy to gasp for some air.

Hi Gwen Yes, I used this method when my greyhound caught the neighbours cat, it worked quickly and effectively.
If it is serious in its intentions then I would try and put a lead on it and tie it to an immovable object - fence or tree, then manouver it to the end of the lead. Put you hands on your own dog (praying you don't get bitten in the process and as soon as the other dog goes to get a better grip remove your dog from the scene.
If there is a gate you can also get one on each side of the gate or door and when they come up for air gradually shut the gate on them.
I have wondered about this in the past too, but I don't think I would put my finger into the mouth of a dog that was attacking - I have heard of a lady getting her finger bitten off trying to help her dog before.

I have heard one method can be to pull off a coat or jumper and throw it over the aggressing dog.

Hi Lindsay
The only time I have ever been bitten during a dog fight was when I followed that advice - would never do it again :-(
Ah - I take that idea back then!

i have heard about pushing your fist down the dogs troat to make it release but this is your the one on the recieving end.same as blocking the air ways so it has to let go.i dont think i would get involved and let the dogs break it up themselve.if you try and move your dog your putting yourself in the line of fire.plus you could get bite by your own trying to protect itself.i think alot of fights look worse than what they are and over quick, even though it doesn't seem like it.i wouldn't be able to pull my hound away as he is a giant breed.but at the end of the day it is up to owners if you know your dog can be funny with others you shouldn't let it off.you can never really know what is round a blind corner.but there is also some one who seems to do it and cause problems for others.

if not using a breaking stickm then the best way is to get your hand under the dogs collar if it is wearing one and twist, this will cut off the air supplyand the dog will need to release its grip for air, this is when you pull the dog away so as not to pull a chunk of the other dog with it.saying that it can be a tough job if you are on your own as the chances are the dog will attack again as soon as you release it,i know 1 person that carries a spare lead incase this happens so he simply can tie the other dog up to put an end to the fracas.
