when a bitch in whelp loses the mucus plug what does it look like when it comes away, and how soon before the pups arrive does this appear?

A sticky jelly blob, my bitch lost hers Saturday lunchtime and had her first pup 10.30 Sunday evening, all bitches are individuals tho.

mine lost a jelly baby size & shape thing, ate it and then threw up 5 mins later, my only panic is that she is only on day 54

she threw up again this morning, she only drank some water, walked across the kitchen and then threw up :(

Have you had her scanned?
- By mumford16 [gb] Date 24.06.04 08:30 UTC
Yes Jackie, she was scanned at 4 weeks and showed 6 at least in there, she is a maiden bitch a SBT and 28" around her stomach.

Hi she is probably nearing whelping as some bitches are sick before and certainly lose jelly mucus just before,my bitch was losing this on and off throughout and has just had 11.As long as the jelly thing she lost was clear i wouldnt worry, just keep an eye on her constantly as she could have them anytime now.My bitch was due this coming friday by the first mating but when my vet scanned her at 4 weeks he said she must of taken on the last mating due to the size of the embryo's which would of made her 8 weeks (56 days)yesterday but she had them yesterday 61 days by first mating or 56 days by last, whichever way you look at it.

She may have "strings" of mucous for about a week before labour starts, and be sick on and off due to the rapid growth and vigorous movement of the pups. Keep an eye on her and dont worry if she seems off her food at this stage, just keep tempting her with tasty bits of food - little and often is best if she is being "picky" and a bit sickly.

That's fine then, just wanted to check that she really was in whelp, things seem to be well on the way and the fact that the plug has come away does not mean the birth is imminent.

thanks guys, she has just been sick again, very watery every time. If it was the plug, whats the longest time you would say she has left?

Emma, is she showing any signs of being unwell, is she depressed or uncomfortable, make allowance for the tummy, do you think there is something wrong. If you have said yes to any of my questions then talk to your vet and if not relax, could be another week yet.

she is fine, still tries to chase the cat, willing to go for a walk, happy, loving cuddles, i am worrying over nothing i know  I will just sit back and try to take it all in my stride :)

thanks Jackie

Don't panic Emma, she will have them when she is ready, usually at the most inconvenient time. If you are at all worried then phone the vets.

Good Luck
