Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How are all the litters coming on?
- By gwen [gb] Date 21.06.04 17:15 UTC
I know we had a whole bunch of litters expected/born last week and the week before.  Just wondered how everyone elses pups were doing?  My lot were 10 days old yesterday, and all had doubled birth weight (they are so fat they appear to be as wide as they are long :) ) then today we have 1 eye open!  (on 1 puppy, that is, not on each!)  Mabel has surpassed all my expectations in the Mothering stakes, she is being an angel, doing the whole feeding, cleaning, paying attention thing without prompting (not common in this breed).  It took about 3 days before she got into the feeding swing, needing prompting and supervision at first, and a little hand holding to ;).  She wanted nothing to do with the washing (either end) so Junior and I  handled this at first, but since the middle of last week she took over, and her little girls are immaculately clean at all times (I did get through rather a lot of cotton wool pads at the begining, though!)

Only unusual occurence so far is on Mabel lips, just where her "cupids bow" would be if she was a person, she has lost all her black pigmentation, and has a pink "pout".  Does not seem sore, as I had wondered if the puppy pee may have casued scald, however, I am applying sudocreme, just in case.  Am dying to take "eye wide open photos!"
bye

Our  litter are coming on fine, they were born last sunday 4 days early,we were away at a dogue de bordeaux show up north, when I got the phone call, it was a quick exit and back down home 200 miles, got back just in time, for the last one to make his appearance, 7 in all. Kylye my daughter managed great, she has been helping me with pups for the last 22 years so I know that I can trust her. It is my first litter with this breed and we weighed them yesterday, 2lb+. The litter girl do's not weigh that and she is 11 weeks. They are all thriving, and mum is a natural no problems at all, which is a relief with a different breed.

Mine are doing great and I am so impressed at their fantastic mum!  How do dogs know just what to do like that?  She is brilliant and is forever washing, tidying and still has the habit of collecting anything from around the house that might be useful.

They have more than doubled their birth weight and are starting to even out.

I am worrying about one new thing after another, first lack of milk, then eclampsia, then pups too warm or cold, etc!  I have hardly slept a wink since they have been born (she might squash them!).

It's been such a wonderful experince for us all and we are now looking forward to eyes opening which they haven't done yet (why?  something wrong surely of course!!!).

Best wishes to everyone else in the same position.
from a worrying Jackyjat!

One of our elkhound bitches lost some of her lovely dark mask keeping her puppies clean (perhaps too clean).  Wasn't really sore, but it was pinkish and some of the hair came out, under the nose.  Don't wish to worry you, but the fur came back in grey :-(  We now call her Scaramouche, as it looks like a little moustache.

Well it is a relief to find someone else has experienced something similar!  No need to worry about hair re-growth, as this area on a pug is just skin - no hair!

My babies that were born on the 15th are doing very well. I lost the runt, so have 8 left. They are little piglets! All you hear when you walk in the room is smacking sounds from them eating. Mom is taking wonderful care of them. She would hardly leave the room the first couple of days, you had to practically drag her outside to go. Now she comes out a few times a day just to say hi and visit for a minute (and see if you have any biscuits handy). Their tails were docked on day 3, I found the trip to the vet quite stressful since I was constantly worried if they were too hot, or will the air conditioner in the car be too cold. Then at the vet's office itself...of course everyone wants to know what you have in the box... "Puppies...yes you can look, NO don't touch them please, NO! you really don't have to show them to YOUR dog! No, the white ones won't change color. :)"
I also check constantly to make sure she hasn't laid on one, or one hasn't gotten under the bedding...are they all eating good still? Everybody breathing good today? Warm enough? Cool enough? Worry, worry, worry!

One of my bitches got sore chapped lips that got depigmented with ehr second litter, but the pigment returned some weeks after.  I used vaseline on them as I suppose it was cleaning all the fluids at birth that did it to her.

I have been told by one of my American Pug list friends that it is due to additonal acid content in the puppy poo, and I need to get something called Acidopholous, so of to the chemist now to see if it is available in the Uk, or if not if we have an equivalent.

Gwen have a look at Acidophilus on http://www.naturesbestonline.com/
It'll give you an idea what you're looking/asking for.

Gwen live natural yoghurt is a great source of acidophilus. Make sure its the live stuff tho, think yeo valley? do a nice organic one :)

Well, I never knew that it was just skin!  Though my young male could probably have told me, having thoroughly investigated every inch of a friend's young female pug.  To Raider, love is pug-shaped, and every pug he sees might be his darling.  Think Polly Pug herself is just being polite.  Lucky she is used to elkhounds.

Hi,after the sadness of losing little one in litter I am pleased the others are all doing well, trouble at times keeping mum with them as she is very friendly and loves her cuddles.I`m giving it another 24hrs and I will be forced to move box into livingroom and hope that solves problem. She also didn`t like it when their nails needed cut.I spoil her silly and that probably half the problem.

the bitch is fine, she is my brothers i was only whelping and rearing the litter. she left my house as soon as we got back from the vets after we lost the pup.the pup only lived for couple of hours. My brother says she is her normal self.

Well my pups are 5 weeks old yesteday and are doing brilliantly.  Poor Carina has really lost condition this time she's really quite skinny but she's running around and playing with her toys etc. so it's not taken the life out of her, she's a realy character.  Can't wait to get her built up again as she's always been such a stocky girl.  The pups are all chunky monkeys and real characters.
