Hi as many of you know my bitch is due to whelp friday.I have just been to my shed to get the heat lamp out only to find it has been crushed!!The one i had was a proper metal infra red lamp from a farm supplies store with the really long cable and a chain. The nearest farm supplies shop to me is quite a long way away and i have just looked on ebay and they have some but totaly different to the one i had,i think these ones are used for sports injuries or something, they are small with a white casing.I probably wont need it as my bitches whelp indoors but jut incase i get a sickly pup or something i want to be prepared.Do you think these other type ones will be just as good or should i really go back to the farm shop and get the proper one again? Also do any of you know where else you can buy the proper ones from? Thanks in advance.

Could i just ask is a heat lamp better than a heat pad, i read somewhere that you cany buy heat pads from argos isdoes anyone know if they are ok

Think you may need both if you have a litter in the winter and do not have heating. I had both but have sold the pannel already. You can always use a hot water bottle if you are carefull not to have it too hot and you will need that if you have to take dam and pups to the vet anyway.

I much prefer heat lamps to pads.  I find the heat more controllable (you can raise or lower them to control output) with a big enough whelping box the bitch can get away from the heat source but the pups stay warm, and a heat lamp drys the pups off if they get at all damp - like just after Mum has given them a vigorous wash.  I do use a heated vet during whelping, to put the pups in while the next is born, which is one of the plastic oval type beds with a built in heat pad.  But only during whelping.

In canse you dont get sorted out with Jackies, Diamond Edge do an excellent heat lamp, with the ceramic bulb, chain etc.  I have had my original one for years, with no problems at all.  I also have the slightly smaller type availabel at Agricultural merchants in my kennels, (the ones wiht the red bulbs)  they are fine for this purpose, but I like the Diamond Edge product for the whelping box.

I think I pay about £10 for the replacemtn bulbs of the ceramic type (never needed to put a new one in, jsut like to have one in stock, just in case) and about £20 for the fitment.  The smaller type were about £20 at the Agric. merchants, cant remember how much the bulbs were, but a lot cheaper than ceramic.  However, they do pop occassionally.
bye
