Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a bitch who will be 5 weeks pregnant tomorrow by her last mating, and showing all signs of pregnancy. My bitch was also pre-mated. She was sick for about a week from about 2 weeks into her pregnancy and now has a cream discharge her teats have got bigger. I took her for a scan today and they said no puppies, is this right as i have seen a few posts which have said that their bitch was pregnant but not confermed on a scan. A friend of mine uses the same vet and have seen puppies on their scan. My bitch has got a larger body then my friends dog does this make any difference. Also can they carry them high in the ribcage or is this just an old wifes tale. Thanks.

Some vets can get it wrong, but at 5 weeks I think they would have seen the little black sacks, but I suppose it depends on how she is carrying and how many there are. My girl was scanned last Monday after we thought she had aborted, she was day 26, the scanning machine was old but we did see 3 pups. I also have another girl that is having a phantom pregnancy, showing all the same signs as my pregnant girl (except the bleeding :-( ). If you're not happy, leave it another week then get her re-scanned.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Thanks sharron, She usually eats like an horse but over the past weeks since we mated her she as picked at her meals. she is usually very playful and at the moment she is quite and sleeps a lot but greats everyone that comes in as nomal so i know shes not ill. Do you have your scans standing up or lying down? As mine was layed down but my friends said they have always had theirs standing up, this might not make a difference but thought i would just ask. Thanks again.

My girls are always scanned standing
my girl was scanned standing too and showed 6

Thanks for all your replys, and i think ill just keep my eye on her if she gains anymore weight then ill take her for another scan. But its interesting to know that you all have had your dogs stood for scans. I would of thought the ultrasound would pick them up anyway but maybe not. They should be able to see something as she was 34 days from her last mating. Never mind we will just have to wait till her next season and try again. At least i still have my girl, who we love very much. If anyone knows of any dog scaned layed down then i would appreciate there opinion. thanks again for your replys.

I know this is an old post but i have just phoned my vets to ask if my meg had her scan laid of stood up and they said "Layed down" does this make it harder has anyone had theres confirmed whilst laying down, she is a GR

All of my girls have always been scanned standing up..........so I'm not sure what difference it would make lying down. I just think that standing everything is sort of forced downwards...lol.

Hi
If we go to the local Agricultural college (we have gone there 3 times) they have the bitch lying on her back and shave her abdomen, they said that a bitch on her back can't hide any pups up under the rib cage.!!!!!!!!!!
Another person we use is a chap called Archie that scans farm animals and he always has the dogs standing and I must admit I find this a lot less stressful for the bitch. The reason I sometimes use one or other is distance, the college is a 15 min drive, Archie is an hour and a half's drive from home. Both of them are £15 per scan but I have more faith in Archie than I do in the college scanner.
Tend to use the college just to confirm the pregnancy. If I want a more detailed scan (ie:- numbers, absorption etc ) I go to Archie.
Regards
Joan

Hello woomeg/Abbeycap
Did the vet conferm pregnancy laid down or was it a negative result and if so do you think your girl needs to go back for a standing scan. ALSO Abbeycap did you have any confermed stood up. My girls teats are becoming quite big but i dont think she looks bigger. If there is one or two i dont think i would see the difference.

Woolmeg, beginning to think your vet may be a waste or space.

So do I, but here are many to choose from where live, but we we wait and see what happens on tuesday. She was scanned at vets laid down - negative result/ John (the farmer) scanned her last nite stood up and thought he saw one but was very high and near her rib cage - doesnt know if its alive!!! I will maybe mention if he would scan her high as her mother had this problem (White Lie) and see if he comes back with anything!!!
