Does anyone know how I can teach my dog to sit straight?? She always sits at an awkward angle!

Thanks

how do you mean sit straight, is this in the heel position or is this when you recall and how old is your dog, as it could be the puppy sit that most pups do.

I always teach my dogs to sit between me and a wall, that way they get into the habit, and when you move away from the wall they know where to sit.... to sit in front in the present,  I sit on a chair with my legs stretched out, feet flat on the floor with just another room for their bottoms, then i can make sure they are straight, with eye contact....good luck...

I'm sorry but this did make me laugh. Did you mean 'enough room' or should I teach my dog to sit in another room by itself! Sorry not getting at you but just found it funny.:) We all need a laugh.

To follow on from Charliepud, after you have done recalls sitting on the chair with your legs out and spread just enough for the dog to get in tight (with feet flat on floor and facing forward) - then do it with your back leaning up against a wall and your feet slightly spread so your dog can get inbetween them.

When using chair or wall call your dog in, if it is correct then throw a titbit behind him/her and call again, if not in tight then use titbit to entice in and if it is better than the time before give tiny titbit and throw another bit behind so you can call in again, and again, and again.

Once your dog comes in straight then throw the titbit at an angle or move yourself to an angle so it is no longer coming in straight.

My dog is 3 years old so it can't be a puppy thing! I don't do obedience, I just want to teach my dog to sit straight in front of me and I know people who do obedience will know how! Thanks for all your replies :)

do a recall with your dog and place your hands where you want to draw the dog in to. i.e between your own legs.  You need to stand with your feet slightly apart to do this. I would then lure the dog with a treat or toy to the position you want.  A treat is best to do this.  Once the dog is in the correct position and ONLY when the dog is in the correct position, reward the dog.  You will need to use a command so the dog learns that to come in straight means that a treat will follow.  I use "straight" which is obvious enough! make sure you reward at the right time though and only reward a straight position.

Ditto, ditto,to what every one else has said, you could also add, patting his bum when hes straight, saying "good straight" (or whatever you are going to use) then titbit, i do this on all the sits(using different words, straight close &sit for the different positions) so that the dog is sure what its beeing rewarded for, also once you are sure the dog knows what is reqiured only reward the best efforts,i will often say,"thats no good" walk off a few steps & ask again! almost always get more of a effort then!

sometimes whilst the dog is coming i will show the titbit & say whats this,to increase the attitude!!

titbit thrown through your legs will speed it all up!
