I am putting my site on search engines but am not wanting to pay.

- By Bec [gb] Date 29.01.02 12:51 UTC
Eventually most of the search engines will pick up your website automatically. I wouldnt bother registering I didnt with my last site and it comes up fine

I take it you are making the site yourself, or do you have someone advising? How deep a knowledge of HTML do you have? Have you bought the web space or are you uploading the site to free space you have with an ISP?

Sorry about all the questions but if you could answer them then i am will be able to give you better advice :).

We have bought web space.
I am working in HTML with no great speed but slowly getting there.

I cheated and bought a program which works like a word processor so I didnt need to learn HTML!
- By heelerkay [gb] Date 29.01.02 16:23 UTC
Is it easy to make changes to your site with this program

Hi

I have built a website using Homestead. It was very easy as it sets everything out for you. All you need to do is scan in pictures and then add them into your website. I think it costs about $29 or so a year or something like that. Pammy has also made her website using this.

Do you have to have homestead as your web address. Also are you
limited to how many pages etc and how do you change whats up there.
can you pickall colours wallpaper clipart, do you have to have advertising on your site.

Ok since i have no idea exactly what you know and what you dont, i might aswell start at the begining. Having bough your own space is makes a massive difference, as to the quality of the site you can produce. There are different types of search engines. The are keyword searches and meta seaches. Keywords doenst rely on HTML as much as meta. The key to getting you site to turn up on a meta engine is in <Meta tags>. You place key words into these tags that the engine will search for on request of the user. You dont always have to pay to submit you site to engines try a search on the web for free submission. Also might be a god idea to link your site to other simlar sites on the web. If you ever need any help with the HTML dont hesitate to ask.

For more info have a look at these sites.

Thanks so much for your help. I will look at the sites you recommend.
Have you done any sites with flash.
- By BGY [gb] Date 29.01.02 17:56 UTC
I am not actually to great at web design. Although i do know how to incorperate flash into a site. I studied analyst programing at university although i havent used html for a while we were made to learn it in a part time module, and it wouldnt take me to long to brush up on it. Infact i am always looking for a way to keep things like that active in my mind as it would be a waste if i just let myself forget it all.

I have bought a book on flash ( flash in 24 hours).
More like 24 years its sitting on the bookshelf .
I might read it one day.
Oh another question do you know where i can get a site visit counter
from I have tried pinching them but cannot turn the clock back.
- By BGY [gb] Date 30.01.02 02:14 UTC
Yeah i will mail you one. Do you want one that all can view or do you want a hidden one that only you can view?
- By heelerkay [gb] Date 30.01.02 09:11 UTC
Thanks.
I think i would like one for all to view.
Hope you don"t think i"m being a pain.
- By BGY [gb] Date 30.01.02 10:18 UTC

I wouldn't bother with Flash yet - it can be bloomin' annoying in my opinion :-) Some of the best sites around don't bother with Flash - they just stick to clean, simple designs that are easy on the eye eg Google, Amazon. If you're just starting out on website design, I would keep things very simple - you can always add the fancy stuff later (if you want it!)
