I wonder if someone can give some idea of hereditary problems the cocker spaniel can suffer from, and also what checks should be made by the breeder before having their dogs produce pups??

I think hip and eye checks are the main two but there could be others.  I'm not an expert but if you do want to discuss it with some of the more knowledgeable members you will probably need to leave contact detail or register, otherwise this thread will be blocked.
