My pup was 14wks on Saturday.  Today she has learned a new hobby... She is eating all her poo.  No matter how fast I act to clean up after her shes still getting a mouthful.

What do I do?  Is something wrong with her?  Shes eating her regular meals and drinking water with no issues.

Sometimes dogs do this because they're not getting enough nutrients from their food, or they're having problems digesting it properly - so their faeces smell and taste quite good to them!

The term is coprophagia and it's really not pleasant.

My advice would be to get her checked over by a vet to rule out any medical reasons for this.  If there's nothing, some people have had success with feeding their animals charcoal biscuits.  My Staffy pup went through a period of coprophagia when she was about the same age and eventually just grew out of it within a couple of months.  I don't think it actually does them any harm (but correct me if I'm wrong!) so maybe you could wait and see if she stops of her own accord?

my aunts little dog does this, except he doesn't eat his own, he eats other's poo with a very zealous attitude!  it is gross!   i've heard that it can be because they are absorbing enough nutrients out of thier own food, but i bet there are other reasons too.  one might be that there is no serious reason.....maybe some dog's just like it!  (gross, i know!)

I heard feeding a lil pumpkin helps, it makes their poo taste awful...I have been doing this with my dogs and it seems to help, T-Bone eats poo all the time and well so far this has curbed her taste :D

thats a good idea.  i think pumpkin is really good for them as well.  lots of vitamins.

You could also try adding courgette or pineapple as they also deter the dog from eating it. Be careful though coz they could just start eating someone elses poo instead!

Thank you all very much.  I'll check with the vet when we see her tomorrow and if all is well I'll try the pumpkin.

Being copraphagic does no harm whatsoever, its just disgusting! :D
Search for copraphagia in the search function as this has come up LOTS of times.  I always suggest using garlic tablets or Deter as this has done the tricks on dogs I know of before.  Best of luck ;)

hello everyone, this is my first post.
i have a 9month old staff, who does this, but she has never eaten her own poo.
evrytime i take her on her daily walks she always eats another dogs poo,it happened again this morning(all over her teeth and gums!)
she gets scolded everytime, but the poo seems to like heroin to her.
the problem is we have 2 small children.

any ideas,thanks in advance.

''If there's nothing, some people have had success with feeding their animals charcoal biscuits.''

I think thats the reason my dog eats his own poo! We feed him charcoal treats to settle his stomach but the colour of the treats is the same colour as his poo so he thinks its a treat. Its absolutely disgusting!

Hi  :-) pineapple chunks are supposed to work also you can 'clicker train' your dog not to eat poo. I have not done it never having needed to but my guess this is how yo do it..take your dog out on a lead to give you some control and when the dog performs you click/treat/praise, this distracts the dog and you then remove the poo in a bag. Always do it every time he goes. After a while you should be able to do it with the dog off the lead, the dog will learn to look for the click /treat/praise as soon at it has performed. Eventually you can drop the treat and just click/praise. If I have missed anything one of the clicker people will correct me :-D
