Hi everyone,
I'd be grateful if someone could give me some info on the above for a friend whose son has an akita with HD. She herself uses this supplement and was very interested to hear that it could be used for dogs too. What I specifically need to know for her is, is it ok to get the human version from Holland and Barrett and if so, what dosage should they give a dog the size of an akita? If this is not the way to go about giving it to a dog as a supplement , how should it be done?
Many thanks :)

When my staff had problems and was put on chondriotin and glucosamine by the vet he told me to buy them from the health food shop as they were cheaper and to give him the same dose as for an adult human.

Glucosamine and Condroitin from health food shop can be give to dogs.I phoned the manufacturer for dosage requirements. The dosage for adult weight and it is gauged at normal dose = 12 stone person. Adjust dosage for dog. ie:- if dog weighs 6 stones then halve the dose, if dog wieght 3 stones, use a quarter of the dose. I use this for Penny (lab) who has HD and arthritis and it works very well.

Many thanks Archer and Kayc,
I'll give her this info today and hopefully it will work for her son's boy too :) She tells me he is a fantastic dog and even when he is in pain he's still a sweetheart, never so much as whimpering despite it being clear that he is sore. They'll be so pleased if this improves things for him :)

Be aware that glucosamine hydrochloride is more bio available to the body than the more common sulphate. Also be aware the quality and strength varies. You may also want to have a chondroitin sourced from marine rather than bovine life.

www.zipvit.co.uk, sorry cant do links. The ZipVit Chondroitin Sulphate is a highly concentrated nutrient extracted and purified Marine source.
M.S.M (Methylsulfonylmethane) also helps for maintenance of joint cartilage.
Green Lipped Mussels is also quite good but not for people or animals with fish allergies. Hope this helps
