Topic Dog Boards / General / Lurcher age?

Hi,

Does anyone on here have any experience with Lurchers?  If so could they tell me what their average life expectancy is (in years)?

Many thanks

As you know, there are many types of lurcher, depending on the breeds they are crossed with. You would need to research the average lifespan of an individual's 'constituent parts'.

thought you might say that, obvious i suppose, our only problem is our lurcher looks like a x between a greyhound and a goat!!! any ideas of a goats life expectancy!!
no seriously we decided its no longer important as we've now rescued the old boy and are just letting him live out his retirement years to the full!! In fact he spends the majority of his time horizontal snoring his head off, what a life!!

Hiya

Depends if you have a lurcher as in 'bred to work' or a lurcher as in 'just happens to be the correct breeds, ie a sighthound and a something else'..

A wolfie to old english sheepdog would technically be a lurcher, however no sensible person would breed such a thing, as it wouldnt work.

The life expectancy of that dog i would say to be around ten, if that.

However, a working bred dog (and most lurchers are, and to get more pedantic, if its NOT bred to work, from working parents then IMHO its not a lurcher) should have a life expectancy into its teens at least.

How big is your lurcher? when you say 'greyhound x goat' could he be a grey x bedlington or grey x deerhound? That will often give the 'goat' appearance....

My saluki x grey i expect to see 13, she is 9 now, and apart from having some lumps removed and being spayed, she is in good nick, not showing signs of slowing down, in fact she seems to be reliving her puppy hood!

My beddy x whippet x wbc x grey (looks like a beddy x whip though) i would hope he should see 15, however as stupid as he is, that is doubtful!

Have you got any pictures? if so, pm me and ill tell you my email addy (dont use the one on here i dont use it any more) and i could ahve a guess at what sort of goat he is x'd with!

i have a lurcher who is now in his 18th year- no one told me he would still be walking a mile a day plus running around the garden at this age.  I found him when he was about 6months old after some Gypsy's moved on. he is a shaggy bringle greyhound cross thing - so devoted to me yet not trust worthy with children.

he even went through a two hour operation to remove loads of rotten teeth in February as i couldn't let him suffer antibiotics for infections anymore - he came through it fine to everyones suprise and is now munching away as if he was only 7!! he's a bit stiff in the mornings but aren't we all!!!

"our lurcher looks like a x between a greyhound and a goat!!!"
That would be a Lab then.  :) DNA testing has proved Labs are genetically related to goats, pigs and vacuum cleaners.  :)  My lab's breeder told me their average age was 12.  My last girl made 14 and a half.  Good for you for taking the old boy in.

My oldest dog is a Lurcher, Toughy is a GH x Irish Terrier and he was 14 in May, fit as a fiddle and grumpy all life long :D.

Mines 14 and a half and im just contemplating her having another dental, shes a canny old thing and doesnt chew her chicken wings properly these days, two crunches and they are gone, so their teeth cleaning properties are reduced!

Abby is 3/4 saluki, 1/4 greyhound.... mm and 100% bonkers :D

aww, is your 14 1/2 year old the same one you mentioned in earlier posts?  I wonder if, five years on, the OP still has their goat x now?! :-)

Our lurcher is a Greyhound, lab x something smaller cross, and he is now 15 years old. His back legs are very weak and he has CRF but is still very interested in life!
