I work with videos on all Standards and when they first came out, we bought 2 DVD/video combo units. The first one went wrong after 3 months and was sent back three times but never worked properly and the other one was fairly poor quality (despite being one of the most expensive) and quite unreliable and difficult to work. We have had to replace them with seperate units :(

I hope someone else has had better experiences ;)

Thank you so much for your reply Malakai! Its very useful to know that yours wasnt very good. What makes did you get? I may get a DVD player and a video player separately instead of getting a combo.

The combo was a JVC I believe but we now have Pioneer DVD players which are excellent - I have Pioneer at home and can't recommend them enough :) Our videos are JVC - again, I have the same at home, although we have SVHS which allows a higher quality of recording but SVHS recordings can't be played in a VHS machine (something to bear in mind if you have more than one in the house)

One of the perks of my job is that I can test run a machine before buying one for myself :)

My sister bought a combi for her husbands birthday March 2003, it has just died and typically just out of guarantee!!  She's not bothering with another as it's double the cost to get repaired, just bought two separate units instead!

we have a toshiba dvd/video combi as we don't have room for two separate units and its really easy to use. We have had it for about a year now and no problems yet (touch wood)  its the same make of the television so that might help communicating depending on how you set it up and the quality of the scart leads unfoutantly you can't use cheapo leads as it will affect the quality of the picture.

Ooooh thanks everso too, as my other half was on about getting a combi DVD/video player for my birthday.
We had been looking at the Samsung one.
I think I'll ask and stick to seperates :D
He wanted to buy a portable combi TV/dvd or video player for me...is it better just to get a TV and then buy the seperates
in your experience?

Sorry to hijack the original thread though!

Yeap, just remember when one thing goes the rest of it has to go to to be repaired.  I think that you're better off with the two separate myself.
