Hi many of you know Jade is pregnant and according to the scan last week she was 5 weeks yesterday.Anyway just now whilst rubbing her belly i noticed she has milk, lots of it too.I have never known it this early on or read of it either, anyone know if this is ok as i think its so early to be full of milk bless her.

In most peoples opinion when does it usually appear?
- By reddoor [gb] Date 03.06.04 23:13 UTC
Hi J :-) Sounds a bit early to me though it does vary fom one bitch to another. I think  seventh week onwards is about average , perhaps your girl is going to whelp early?
- By tcarlaidh Date 04.06.04 05:33 UTC
My girls have only ever had milk in on week 8 and more often than not just a couple of days before whelping.
All individuals tho I guess.

Hi,  week 8 on is the norm with my lot, with the very occasional one getting the milk through between weeks 7-8.
bye

Thanks to all of you for your replies.I thought it seems too early and im sure i read in my book by dieter flieg that in all his years of experience any bitch that produces milk earlier than the 7th week is having a phantom.I know she is definately pregnant because we saw the pups on the scan but im thinking now maybe she is reabsoring??On the other hand like you say all bitches are different and maybe she's just an exception to the rule(hopefully anyway),thanks again to you all for your replies.

One of my friends Great Danes had milk from week one & it was flowing alll the time, she had obviously decided to let everyone she was in whelp from day one, she whelped 15 puppies ion day 63 like shelling peas from a pod & reared 13 of them.

She was literally dripping with milk & the vet checked her & found no problems

Thanks for that, that has made me feel more positive. Its just i was a bit worried too because still has so long to go she will be carrying around all this excess baggage for ages but she seems to be coping with it brilliantly, thanks again.

My GSD bitch also has milk from week 5....she always has a lot of milk, and has had litters of 7/8.  My other bitches have only had milk from 7 1/2 - 8 weeks.

Day 56 - no milk here!  Should I worry?
- By reddoor [gb] Date 05.06.04 08:35 UTC
Not long now then JJ  :-D you could be a bit busy by this time next week!  I wouldn't worry about the milk they are all different just like us :-) Some bitches don't have milk until they whelp when the hormone that stimulates labour finally triggers the milk though this is not so usual. As I posted before one of my girls 'stole' a pooly orphan kitten from it's box by the fire and develoved milk overnight and reared it successfuly (she had previously had  2 litters)

Day 60 and no milk - should I worry now?
- By SharonM Date 09.06.04 06:47 UTC
No my girl didn't have milk right up to the time she went into labour, actually even after she delivered I was worried she didn't have any, it wasn't until about 5 days later that she actually 'looked' full of milk!
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 09.06.04 07:05 UTC
Thanks Sharon, you have cockers too, don't you?

Actually upon further investigation and a bit of prodding her rear teats do look a little pendulous, even when she is lying on her back.  We have had lots of digging in the night and lots of licking this morning.
- By reddoor [gb] Date 09.06.04 08:59 UTC
Hi jj not long now :-) one thing that can might like to do is to wash and gently massage the teats with a warm wet flannel. I think it is soothing for the bitch and can help stimulate milk.

jackyjat........yes I have cockers too, just waiting to see now if my girl is in whelp.........AND BEFORE I GET TOLD OFF FOR ADVERTISING, ALL MY PUPS ARE SOLD!! :-)  probably my next 3 litters too........lol.

Sounds like things maybe on the move for you soon then, the litter I had last year were born day 61, she had 7!  Good luck, let us know how you get along
