How can you be sure that a pup you are buying is definetly a pedigree?

If you mean with a pedigree, it is just a piece of paper with names written on it. Useless unless you know something about your breed. Usually backed by a KC number.
If you mean you go to see a pup from a litter and you aren't sure if it's purebred then asking someone who knows the breed to go with you would be the easiest I suppose. Same with an adult, you should be able to get a definate answer on an adult dog, or a 6 week old pup too.
If you mean is the breed your looing at buying a pedigree/KC recognised breed then ask here :)

A pup whose registered with the Kennel Club will stand the highest chance of being a pure bred puppy (ie - both parents of the same breed) though it's not impossible to mate a bitch with two dogs, one of who may be pure bred, or the same breed as the bitch and KC registered, and the other not - so some or all of the pups are not pure bred. BTW - the bitch must also be KC registered (and not just on the activites register ;))

All pups have a pedigree that is a list of the ancestors although a lot of breeders do not know what the ancestors are and you can not rely on pedigree lists that are only reliant on the breeders word, the safest way is a kennel club registered pup as only a very very few are not what they appear to be although a very few may have been sired by something other than that listed but if the breeder does not own the sire then any fraud would require the conspiracy or at least 2 people.

In short Mr P, you can't. The only way is through DNA testing both the supposed sire and dam and that is not very practical at the moment. The only advice I can give is, dont buy unless you really feel you can trust the breeder.

Your best bet is to go to a reputable breeder ...they have something to loose...ie their reputation!!
