Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Discharge after mating!
- By JReynolds [gb] Date 02.06.04 09:14 UTC
just under 3 weeks ago we had our girl mated, for the past couple of days she has had a brown discharge.  We took her to the vet who said it was probably infection and put her on a 7 day course of anti-biotics.

Has this happened to anybody else and did the pregnancy progress normally?

A very worried mum!

I've got exactly the same problem at the moment, my girl was mated 2 weeks ago today,  she too has a brown discharge which my vet also told me was infection from the stud dog, my girl is on a 7 day course of Noroclav 250mg, I'm keeping everything crossed that it is just infection and that the (possible) pregnancy will continue!

Let us know how you get on, I'm keeping everything crossed.

This is becoming ever more common throughout all breeds and more and more bitches are missing, you have to think of Pyo but I think it is to do with Canine Herpes Virus, which is far more common than people realise, especially now that dogs are readily available at stud from abroad and are shown over here.

My girl is so far fine in herself, not drinking excessively, she hasn't got a temperature and her glands aren't enlarged, she's still eating and other than being like my shadow she's her normal self.  She did do exactly the same last time we had her mated, she had a healthy litter of 7 pups, so I'm keeping everything crossed it's the same this time!

Hi, Ok My bitch is on day 45,She was mated on days 12 + 15,3 days after her 2nd mating she had this brown none offensive discharge, which lasted 4 days, then it went green,it was thick and looked my little one had sneezed on the floor, took her to the vets and he took a swab, also put her on a course of antibiotics,he phoned me 2 days later to say that she had some kind of infection didnt know wot it was,but he knew that it wasnt pyro,so anyway after 3days on these it had turned colour altogether,it was white. So even know my vet is still none the wiser wot was the matter with my girl which was put to a sire that had only been proven once before,to a maiden bitch like mine was,but the stud dog that i used and the bitch he was mated to are both being shown,so there must be some truth in the dreaded k9 herpes virus caught from the shows. But my girl is well and blooming very well, with the rite colour discharge now for a pregnant girl.Julia x

Thanks Sandridge, I'm hoping all will be well here too!  She's certainly not showing any signs of being ill, she's had two days of anti-biotics now, so fingers crossed a couple more days and it will disappear for good!

We worry when they come in season, we worry when they are mated, we worry if they're pregnant, then we worry because they are pregnant.......lol.   I will have her scanned in a couple of weeks just to put my mind at ease, but she is showing positive signs lets just hope it continues that way!

Thanks

Just an update, my girl is definitely showing signs of being pregnant, but still has this discharge,  she's absolutely fine in herself, not drinking more than usual, not weeing more, her nipples are HUGE belly feels firm and the signs I would expect to see at this stage but still has this discharge which I must admit is still worrying me.  She is booked in at the vets next Wednesday for a scan, so only time will tell..........I think it's going to be a very long week!  :-(
