Topic Dog Boards / Health / Umbilical hernia op
- By kia mummy [gb] Date 28.05.04 16:53 UTC
I have a small pup with an umbilical hernia. Was checked by vet when he was 2 days old and vet said it was only slight. He's a chubby fella being a singleton pup and I fancy that his increased weight is pushing it out further.Obviously when he grows and is weaned he will loose a bit of his puppy fat and it may become less noticable.
I'm taking him back to the vets to be checked over and have his first jab and I'll ask then whether or not he'll need an op.
I've read conflicting posts about whether hernias of this kind should be operated on or left alone.
He won't go for show as his coat  is not broken enough.
I don't have a lot of faith in vets when it comes to things like this and I've read of a few people who were bought a pup with an  U H  and were advised by their vet to have it done even though the breeder and the breeders vet said it was fine. After all some vets are  only after the money.
Really not sure what to do here.I 'd hate to sell the pup   and then have  new owners get back to me saying he nees an op for it.
I'm really not sure whether to keep him a while and get him operated on or sell him with the hernia at 8 weeks old??
Just looking for advice really.
How much is an op for Umbilical hernia anyway??

It depends on the type of hernia, they can mend themselves with in 6 months or so I beleive, so hard to tell at this age..If not then he will need an op :(

Did you do a search on here about it? There has been a couple of post a while back :)
