Hi everyone, I saw a post last week about travelling dogs in the car and air conditioning and fans. But I didn't make a note of what was recommended, so what can you advise? I'm worried about taking my black Giant Schnauzer from East Anglia to Devon in August for the family holiday. Our car doesn't have air conditioning and all the garage would say about it when I asked was "It's un-economical!" I only need it for long trips in the heat so my dog doesn't keel over! Any help would be appreciated.

We have a.c in our cars but we also have battery operated fans for the dog, because if the engine isn't running the a.c. doesn't work!We also stop frequently for comfort both for us and our dog, stretch the legs and do the necessary! We always carry lots of fresh water too of course, towels in case of a pond, sea, lake any water she may 'discover' :D and snacks (more for us than her!) a sun/heat reflecting window cover is useful too, plus the 'poo bags' naturally.
Hope some of this is helpful.

The night before you travel cover your car with either reflective sheets which you can buy or old white sheets from Oxfam, this will help keep the car cool and prevent it heating up before you start off.

You don't mention if you have a cage but I would surround the cage with bottle of frozen water, you can also buy cool mats which are soaked in water and provide a cool seating area.

Shades can be put on all the windows including the rear screen and you can attach a fan to the cage itself.

All service stations will fill up  a bag of ice for you if you ask for free.

yes, those suggestions above are great ones.  i never thought of bags of ice.  the important to remember is that your parked car will heat up very quickly.  if you stop to go to the bathroom or get gas, or for any reason, and you get out.....the car's inside will heat up in a matter of minutes and your dog can over heat and die.  it doesn't take very long for this to happen.  i travel with my dog in the car all the time.  i just remember that while we are driving i keep the AC on and/or keep the back windows opeen for him.  if i get out, i open all the windows all the way and am only gone for a minute.  i also stop and let him get out and stretch and potty often.  also, keep a water dish and water in your car so that when you stop, you give your dog a chance to drink.  they can get so thirsty and dehydrated in the car.

just be careful and mindful of your pup in the car.  it should be fine if you are.  Happy travels!
