An affix is a name a breeder applies for, and, if granted by the Kennel Club, is the only person who can register dogs with that name. It is an identifying name, rather like a surname. As a puppy can only be registered by its breeder, so that breeder can only give that part of the name to dogs they own. When a puppy is sold, the new owner can add their own affix (if they have one) to the existing name. The dog's breeder's affix doesn't change, but any future pups will be registered with the
new owner's affix (if that's clear).
